“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name. Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
October 20: Irena, Urszula
October 21: Bernard, Celina, Dobromił, Elżbieta
October 22: Filip, Halka

PRAYING OF THE ROSARY – Every Wednesday before the 4 p.m. Mass (beginning at approximately 3:35 p.m.).
CATECHISM AND POLISH CULTURAL CLASSES, led by Krista Ann Starzomski, will resume today and will continue until Victoria Day weekend.
AFTER MASS TODAY, WE WILL BE PLANTING TULIP BULBS NEAR THE GROTTO FOR NEXT SPRING. WELCOME TO ANYONE WHO WISHES TO PITCH IN. IT SHOULD ONLY TAKE ABOUT 10 MINUTES. Many thanks!
PLEASE NOTE: We have some additional complimentary pumpkins this week. If your family did not get one last week, please pick one up downstairs after Mass.
HANDWRITTEN NOTE RECEIVED FOR PRODUCE HARVESTED FROM OUR PARISH OGRÓDEK (FOOD GARDEN) ON THANKSGIVING AND DELIVERED TO LOAVES AND FISHES: “Thank you to St. Mary’s Polish Church for the beautiful garden vegetables and herbs.”
OCTOBER 22: FEAST OF BLESSED POPE JOHN PAUL II: In his audience last Wednesday, Pope Francis, addressing Polish-speaking pilgrims, asked for the intercession of Blessed John Paul II on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the commencement of his pontificate:Wszystkich Was tu obecnych i waszych najbliższych zawierzam wstawiennictwu Błogosławionego Jana Pawła II, w trzydziestą piątą rocznicę wyboru na Stolicę Piotrową, i z serca Wam błogosławię. Niech będzie pochwalony Jezus Chrystus!
Our church will be open for prayer and quiet meditation on Tuesday evening (6-9 p.m.). We will have on hand Blessed John Paul II prayer cards. Everyone is welcome – even for a few minutes. (The cover of the paper copy of the bulletin had a sketch of Blessed John Paul II and recognition of his upcoming feast day, October 22.)
PLEASE NOTE: We have some additional complimentary pumpkins this week. If your family did not get one last week, please pick one up downstairs after Mass.
PARISH FOOD GARDEN – HARVESTING: Much of what remained in the parish food garden was picked on Thanksgiving Monday. There were onions, tomatoes, parsley, and still some cucumbers that had not ripened earlier. These were taken to Loaves and Fishes. Much of it was used immediately for a soup that was being prepared. Thank you to everyone who has been looking after the garden. Special thanks to Larry Gniewek who has been checking on the garden regularly on weekdays.
KAPLICZKA UPDATE: The various community partners are drafting a new design – one that is hard to vandalize and well lit. The immigrant heritage parkette and kapliczka (roadside shrine) are to be developed on the same site, as per the provincial funding. The neighbouring lot has been acquired (by the Sydney Architectural Conservation Society – which owns the kapliczka/parkette site), and brush will be cleared from it. Target date for the entire parkette (which will include interpretive panels and other features) is summer of 2014. The parish has a designated special project account for all those donations received to date that have been directed to us as one of the partner organizations. You can designate a donation by a simple note on your cheque or envelope.
Congratulations to our Pogoria Polish Folk Ensemble for a successful performance in Halifax last weekend for Pomorze’s 30th anniversary!
WELCOMING PEOPLE (BACK) TO CHURCH: As part of our outreach, letters of welcome and introduction from Father Paul will be sent to former parishioners or people who might wish to join us. We are blessed to have a warm and welcoming parish, journeying together in faith and service, with a unique identity and a living heritage, where people genuinely care about each other. If you know someone who might appreciate a letter, please share his or her name (and mailing address if possible) with Marjorie Ardelli, Secretary of the Rada -- 794-2910; sheep@syd.eastlink.ca
POLAND’S DRAFT PLAN FOR SUPPORTING POLONIA COMMUNITIES (POLISH-HERITAGE COMMUNITIES OUTSIDE POLAND): Consul General Andrzej Szydlo has shared with us a draft of the Polish government’s policy to support and encourage longstanding Polish-heritage communities like ours. The document is posted on the bulletin board. Key features include more support from the Polish government for Polish-language instruction outside Poland and more efforts to bring Polish-heritage communities together to work on common projects.
PARISH CENTENARY COOKBOOKS AND T-SHIRTS ARE STILL FOR SALE: Please speak with Shauna McKay. These make great gifts!
ADDITIONAL COPIES OF OUR NEW EDITION BOOK PRZEZ POKOLENIA: PRAYERS AND CUSTOMS OF ST. MARY’S POLISH CHURCH are available for purchase ($10.00). The copies that are in the pews are for church use only. Thank you.
EXHIBIT EXTENDED UNTIL THE END OF OCTOBER: The St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society is also considering having a permanent exhibit in the back room, consisting of any items that you might wish to leave. Dziekujemy uprzejmie!

This year we are presenting “The Bible: from the Old testament through to the New – a history.” The program will be held on Thursday evenings, beginning October 17, 6:30pm, in the downstairs meeting room at Holy Redeemer Church. No charge and all are welcome.
The paper copy of the bulletin also contained a photograph of Sister Mary Johanna Paruch of our parish meeting recently with Pope Francis during a conference she was attending in Rome.
TODAY – SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20 – IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY: “I see the dawn of a new missionary age. Although at first sight we may be struck by negative factors in the world picture, we must look beyond these for signs of people drawing ever closer to the Gospel: the rejection of violence and war; respect for the human person and human rights; the desire for freedom, justice and brotherhood.” –Blessed Pope John Paul II (1992)
