“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
September 15: Maria, Nikodem
September 16: Cyprian, Edyta, Eugenia, Franciszek, Kamila, Kornel, Lucja, Łucja, Wiktor
September 17: Drogosław, Franciszek, Justyn, Justyna, Teodora
September 18: Dobrowit, Irena, Józef, Stefania
September 19: Konstancja, Teodor, Więcemir
September 20: Agnieszka, Barbara, Dionizy, Eustachiusz, Eustachy, Fausta, Faustyna, Filipina, Irena, Klemens, Mieczysława, Miłowuj, Oleg, Perpetua, Protazy

RESPONSES IN POLISH WHEN THE GOSPEL IS PROCLAIMED: Father Paul is now introducing and concluding the Gospel reading in Polish.
In introducing the Gospel, the celebrant (priest) says, “Słowa Ewangelii według świętego …”
We respond: “Chwała Tobie, Panie” [Pronunciation: “H-v-a-wa / toe-bee-e / Pa-nee-e”]
In concluding the Gospel reading, the celebrant says, “Oto słowo Pańskie.”
We respond: “Chwała Tobie, Chryste.” [Pronunciation: “H-v-a-wa /toe-bee-e / Hris-t-e”]

Bóg Zapłać! Last weekend was one we will remember for many years to come. The banquet, the Centenary Mass, and the Polish Festival were wonderful and meaningful events by all accounts. Thank you and God bless for your extremely hard work! There were big jobs and so many details. Thank you for coming through yet again! We should have a video link on our website shortly. We pray that our faith, our mutual aid as a community, our commitment to this sacred place and to our parish, and our rich heritage will never die! We have received a special blessing from Pope Francis, and we will find an appropriate and special moment to have it formally presented.

CATECHISM AND POLISH CULTURAL CLASSES, led by Krista Ann Starzomski, will resume the first Sunday after Thanksgiving (Sunday, October 20) and continue until Victoria Day weekend.

ST. MARY’S POLISH PARISH SELECTED FOR A SPECIAL AWARD:  Our parish has been selected to receive a Places That Matter Award. This is an award that is given to an organization of any denomination that demonstrates effective outreach and makes a positive difference in the broader community. The award is administered by the United Church of Canada’s Sydney Presbytery. Our nomination came as a (pleasant) surprise. It’s a very kind gesture between faiths, and a pat on the back to all our parishioners, who work very hard.

ACKNOWLEDGING DONORS FOR FLOWERS FOR SEPTEMBER 8th: The “in memory of” donations were acknowledged on page 7 of the official programme distributed last week for the events of September 6-8. Some additional donations have since been coming in, and we will have a final, up-to-date list in the bulletin next Sunday.

SPECIAL PUBLICATIONS FOR OUR CENTENARY: Thanks to everyone who bought a centenary cookbook. Furthermore, we will be getting some additional copies of the other new book Przez Pokolenia: Prayers and Customs of St. Mary’s Polish Church. These will be placed in the pews and kept in the church for regular use.

RECENT REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS: Just in time for September 8th, we managed to complete the washroom improvements and replace the stair carpets, as well as re-landscape the grotto, restore the exterior sound system, and install new curtains downstairs. Thanks to everyone who rallied to help!

CENTENARY EXHIBIT: Our Centenary Historical and Art Exhibit Sto Lat! The First Century of St. Mary’s Polish Parish is still up for the time being. If you have visitors in town please ensure that they make a point to see it!

ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM: Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier, will again host a ten-week DVD program for adults. This year we are presenting “The Bible: from the Old testament through to the New – a history.” The program will be held on Thursday evenings, beginning October 17, 6:30pm, in the downstairs meeting room at Holy Redeemer Church. No charge and all are welcome.

OUR PARISH’S ALTAR SOCIETY AND OUR LADY OF LA SALETTE: The following statement was presented at last week’s Centenary Banquet by Peggy Ryba and Delores Starzomski on behalf of the Altar Society: According to our minutes and records, the Altar Society was started in 1924 by several dedicated women, whose names can be found in the Centenary exhibit. Dues at the time were 25 cents a month. This changed to 50 cents a month in 1959. Minutes were kept in Polish until May 7, 1967. To this day members endeavour to learn the language and keep it alive. The duties of the Altar Society were -- and are -- caring for the altar, as well as cleaning within the church and rectory .The Society also fund-raised to buy needed supplies, flowers, carpets, and even major appliances. There are 25 living members.  The St. Mary’s Polish Parish Altar Society has always been a big part of the backbone and the living fabric of our parish. The Altar Society is named after Matka Boska Saletynska – Our Lady of La Salette. It was on September 19, 1846, that Our Lady appeared near La Salette, France. On the 150th anniversary of this event in 1996, Blessed Pope John Paul II remarked that “La Salette is a message of hope, for our hope is nourished by the intercession of her who is the Mother of humanity.” Our Lady of La Salette, look over us with your love. Inspire us to a life of service and kindness. Help us to see everyone we meet as our sisters and brothers. Lead us to empathy and generosity of spirit.

LET US CONTINUE TO HEED THE HOLY FATHER’S CALL TO PRAY FOR PEACE IN SYRIA
