OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS
A NOTE FROM FATHER RICH: Niech będzie pochwalony Jezus Chrystus! Praise be Jesus Christ ! Dear Parishioners and Friends of St, Mary's: I will return to Las Vegas this week and will plan to return with my car the third week of June. Our Mass schedule will return to Sundays and Wednesdays. There are a number of Mass intentions open after May 28th for several Sundays and Wednesdays. Please see Father Evo before or after Mass to schedule Mass. I will offer several Masses for Juliann (Wojcik) Davidson in Las Vegas. We had a meeting at the Glebe house of all participants in the Poland Pilgrimage Tour. In total there will be 9 of us from Sydney, to be joined by 15 or 16 from Las Vegas in Berlin. May you all have a blessed week and advance best wishes to all of our mothers living and prayers for our deceased.
A NOTE OF THANKS: The Polish Café on May 2nd went very well. Thanks to everyone who helped out and to everyone who brought a dish! Thanks to the students who presented their artwork! Wednesday evening’s May 3rd lecture to mark the special feast day and holiday by our guest author, Sophie Hodorowicz Knab, was inspiring and moving. Sophie focused on her most recent book on Polish roadside shrines. If you would like a copy of her slides or a recording of the presentation, please speak with Tom Urbaniak. The lecture was dedicated to the memory of Steve Melnick. We took time at the beginning to honour Steve. We also observed a moment of silence. Thank you as well to Stephanie for her remarks. Jean Annette White sang with a heavenly voice, as always! – Witaj Majowa Jutrzenko at the beginning and Apel Maryjny – Maryjo Krόlowo Polski – at the end. Wandzi Pierrynowski introduced our guest speaker. Jerry Pocius did the door prize draw for two of Sophie’s books on Polish customs and traditions. These were won by David LeBlanc and Krystyna Black. The lecture was hosted by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society, in collaboration with the Atlantic Canada District of the Canadian Polish Congress and the CBU Tompkins Institute.
HOUSING CHALLENGES IN OUR COMMUNITY – KAIROS ECUMENICAL PROJECT: Representatives of the various churches – which our parish has been hosting for meetings – met on Monday with CBU. The outcomes were: We will proceed to form a pilot-project volunteer network that can accompany students at initial meetings with landlords. Another sub-group will look at creative transportation options to make it easier for people to rent out space in outlying communities. CBU will work on an orientation/basic screening for the volunteers.
NEW CANDLE CARDS: You might have noticed new candle cards beside the votive candles. If you light a candle, you may wish to take a card, fill it out and give it to someone (eg. to the family of a person in whose memory you lit a candle). Thanks to Marjorie Ardelli for bringing this suggestion forward, which was discussed at a recent Rada meeting.
ALTAR SOCIETY: Thank you to Ursula Melski and Eileen Fagan-Steele for their service in April. And thank you to Peggy and Lynette Ryba for their service in May.
FUND-RAISING FOR UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE: We are using all the funds raised to support three charities that are directly helping refugees and displaced people either within Ukraine itself or who have fled to Poland. Our largest chunk of support has been going to our sister city Wałbrzych’s Ukrainian refugee assistance fund (via the CBRM). We are also supporting Caritas efforts on the ground (via the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace) and the Catholic Near East Welfare Association. We have special envelopes (marked “Ukrainian Humanitarian Assistance”) at the back of the church if you are considering making a contribution. Thank you for your support in the midst of all the suffering caused by this terrible invasion.
VEHICLE PLATES: Cape Breton Polonia and Nova Scotia Polonia front vehicle plates are still available at the back of the church. $25.00 each
FOOD CUPBOARD: Please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item (e.g. shampoo, soap, toilet paper) to church when you come to Mass. There is a collection box at the entrance to the church. We try to fill the Food Cupboard after each Sunday Mass. Thank you so much!
OUR POLISH-THEMED RADIO SEGMENTS: The Coast Radio 89.7 (weekdays at 3:50pm and 7:50pm or any time at coastalradio.ca). This coming week's topic will be Polish Vegetable Salad /Sałatka Jarzynowa. Thanks to Robert Schella for lending his voice and to this week’s sponsors, John and Deanie Morykot.
We’re always looking for sponsors and volunteers. It’s $100 for a whole week. Sponsors are recognized on air – and any dedications, too (eg. if you’re sponsoring as a memorial or as a birthday or anniversary gift). The Coast is generously redirecting the sponsorships back to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society (which produces the segments), which has been a big help to the Society. If you think you might like to sponsor a week, please e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca or call 563-1226. Many thanks!
UPDATE ON RESURRECTION CEMETERY: The Nova Scotia legislature’s Standing Committee on Private and Local Bills has stopped Bill 274, which would have problematically changed Resurrection Cemetery’s structure to exclude the parishes and the Catholic community from being entitled to a role or to information/voice in the cemetery. Both the diocese and local Catholics were concerned about the bill, though the next steps remain unclear.
PUBLIC HEALTH PROTOCOLS – MASKS ARE OPTIONAL BUT STILL RECOMMENDED IN CHURCH. Dziękujemy!
COLLECTION FOR APRIL 30: $924.90 including $300.00 for Ukrainian relief (additional from Marjorie and Paul’s bottle collection) and $75.00 for the Building Fund. Thank you for your generosity to carry on the work of our parish and maintain our beautiful sacred space. Bόg zapłać!
RECENT IMO ( IN MEMORY OF) CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE BUILDING FUND:
IMO Frank Googoo from Frank Starzomski
IMO John Tynski from Toni LaRusic

FATHER RICH’S COLUMN: Many thanks to all our parishioners and friends who attended the Mass on Saturday taped for next Sunday, May 7th on CTV-Mass for Shut-Ins. Special thanks to readers, our altar server, choir and organist, our offertory gift bearers and all participants. Bόg Zapłać-May God reward you. This Fourth Sunday of Easter is known as Good Shepherd Sunday and the Holy Father and the Church has designated this Sunday to be a World Day of Prayer for Vocations. We ask the Lord to send us Good Shepherds (priests and deacons) and also religious sisters and lay brothers to serve God's people. The month of May is very much a Marian month and we will say or sing after Mass the Litany of Loretto through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Please pray for the soul of Adele Kokoszka Young (Bernie's sister) who died in Barrie, Ontario. Her funeral will take palce later this month in Glace Bay. Religious instruction (catechsim class) will begin today for a small group of three girls and two boys to prepare for their First Confessions and Communion in our parish which we hope to schedule in October, and, if possible, with the presence of Bishop Wayne Joseph Kirkpatrick our bishop of Antigonish. I would like to meet with our pilgrim travelers going to Poland this Friday after Mass in Sala 1050. Next week after Monday's Mass we will return to twice a week schedule of Masses (Sunday morning and Wednesday evening) as I will return to Las Vegas for several weeks. I hope to return the third week of June. Have a blessed week!
