SUMMER SCHOOL IN WAŁBRZYCH, POLAND – OUR SISTER CITY: Offered by CBU for five weeks starting June 12. For credit, in English. Two courses team taught by CBU and Angelus Silesius University faculty. Interesting field work in the city and meetings with community leaders. We will study twin cities and community development in cities where industries have closed. There are bursaries to cover travel and accommodation costs (based on need). If you know any CBU students, please make them aware of this unique opportunity. Non-CBU students may be accepted as well as a “continuing education” offering. For more information, please speak with Tom Urbaniak (tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca).
LOOKING AHEAD TO MAY 3rd: We’re pleased to share that on Wednesday, May 3, the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society, in collaboration with the Atlantic Canada District of the Canadian Polish Congress, will be hosting an on-line lecture (on Zoom) with the author Sophie Hodorowicz Knab. She has written several beautiful books in English about Polish traditions, folklore, cooking, and more. Actually, some of her books are already in the homes of Polish Cape Bretoners. Her latest book is about Polish roadside shrines. A list of Sophie’s books can be found here: www.sophieknab.com/my-books.html. This lecture will be dedicated to the grateful memory of Steve Melnick.
VEHICLE PLATES: Cape Breton Polonia and Nova Scotia Polonia front vehicle plates are still available at the back of the church. $25.00 each
FUND-RAISING FOR UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE: We are using all the funds raised to support three charities that are directly helping refugees and displaced people either within Ukraine itself or who have fled to Poland. Our largest chunk of support has been going to our sister city Wałbrzych’s Ukrainian refugee assistance fund (via the CBRM). We are also supporting Caritas efforts on the ground (via the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace) and the Catholic Near East Welfare Association. We have special envelopes (marked “Ukrainian Humanitarian Assistance”) at the back of the church if you are considering making a contribution. Thank you for your support!
FOOD CUPBOARD: Please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item (e.g. shampoo, soap, toilet paper) to church when you come to Mass. These items will help stock our food cupboard outside the Polish Village Hall. There is a significant need in our community. Thank you for any help.
OUR POLISH-THEMED RADIO SEGMENTS: The Coast Radio 89.7 (weekdays at 3:50pm and 7:50pm or any time at coastalradio.ca). This coming week's topic will be the 550th Birthday of Copernicus (Mikołaj Kopernik). Many thanks to Bob Lewandowski for lending his voice to the segment. This segment is sponsored in memory of Rudy Pierrynowski from Juliette MacLeod.
We’re always looking for sponsors and volunteers. It’s $100 for a whole week. Sponsors are recognized on air – and any dedications, too (eg. if you’re sponsoring as a memorial or as a birthday or anniversary gift). The Coast is generously redirecting the sponsorships back to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society (which produces the segments), which has been a big help to the Society. If you think you might like to sponsor a week, please e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca or call 563-1226. Many thanks!
NICOLAUS COPERNICUS (Mikołaj Kopernik): The Polish astronomer born on February 19, 1473 – 550 years ago – showed that the sun and not the Earth is the centre of the solar system. His works and writings revolutionized science. We will be doing several activities to mark the 550th birthday in connection with Polish Heritage Month later this year, including a sundial project in collaboration with the Gabarus Lightkeepers Society!
PUBLIC HEALTH PROTOCOLS – MASKS ARE STILL STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Thanks for all your kindness, patience, and co-operation through the pandemic.
COLLECTION FOR FEBRUARY 12: $1073.00, including $203.00 for Candlemas Candles. Thank you for your generosity. Bόg zapłać!
THANKS VERY KINDLY FOR YOUR DONATIONS TO OUR PARISH : We are truly grateful for everyone’s generosity through the pandemic. If you are attending Mass, you will find a collection basket near the entrance and exit (since we are not passing around the basket due to the public health restrictions). Also, please feel free to use the mail: St. Mary’s Polish Parish, 21 Wesley St., Sydney, NS, B1N 2M5. Donations can also be made securely on-line at Canada Helps (which will email you an instant tax receipt): https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-marys-polish-parish/. REPORT FROM FATHER RICH: Niech bedzie Pochwalony Jezus Chrystus! Greetings from Las Vegas ! We approach the holy season of Lent which in Polish and Ukrainian is called Great fast “Wielki Post”. This penitential season that prepares us for the Paschal Mysteries of Holy Week and Easter begins on Ash Wednesday (“Środa Popielcowa“). On Ash Wednesday the faithful of the Roman Rite come in large numbers to have the blessed ash imposed upon our heads or foreheads to remind us of our mortality. Our bodies someday will turn to ash. We are called to take seriously the faith journey that began at our baptism that will lead us hopefully to eternal life if we are faithful in following Christ and the Gospel. I encourage all to Holy Mass that day and receive the blessed ash. Also, it is good to set goals of what it is we wish to abstain from in penance or also what work of charity we wish to do during the forty days of Lent. Please remember that Ash Wednesday is a day of fast (three meals without snacking in between) and abstinence from meat. Here in the States all Fridays of Lent are meatless and although not required by the Canadian Church, some form of penance should be practiced every Friday, the day of the Lord’s passion and death. Very important in the Lenten observance in preparation for the Great Night “Wielkanoc” (Easter) is the reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Penance in individual confession of our sins. During my short stay the first week of March as well as before and during Holy Week, I will be available to hear confessions before all Masses in our reconciliation room that offers privacy behind a screen as well as face to face encounter with the priest. Before I left in January, I had a meeting of parents of children who need to prepare for the first sacraments (Penance and Eucharist). We agreed to plan for a date for October. During my spring and summer visits, I will have some sessions with the children as well as help prepare parents with the materials to also catechize at home. We may also have a couple for Confirmation. Bishop Wayne said he would be willing to come back for a visit where we could combine the celebration of First Holy Communion and Confirmation together. I am planning to make a short visit next week from Wednesday March 1st thru Sunday, March 5th. During that time I will offer Holy Mass on Wednesday and Friday evening as well as Thursday and Saturday morning at 9:00am as well as the Sunday Mass. I am happy to read in the bulletin and am grateful that Father Evo has scheduled some extra Masses for the benefit of the parishioners. May the Lord bless you all this coming Lent. -- Father Rich
Post-script from Father Rich: Several Masses have been offered in the Our Lady Queen of Angels Chapel at our school for the following intentions: Steve Melnick from Flora Marchand, Baker Family, Carolyn & Michael Kiley, Delores Moore; Holy Souls in Purgatory from Jean Annette White
