OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS
WELCOME: A warm welcome today to Bishop Wayne Kirkpatrick. Witamy serdecznie!
AFTER MASS TODAY: Please join us at the Polish Village Hall for the Opłatek Potluck. There is no charge. This is one of our special annual traditions for the extended Christmas season. Thank you to everyone who has taken a line in our pop-up Jasełka! Everyone who has a line will be called up right after the meal. And thanks to the choir for leading the singing of the kolędy that are interspersed into the Jasełka.
A NOTE ABOUT MASS FOR SHUT-INS WITH ST. MARY’S POLISH PARISH: Sincere thanks to the many fellow parishioners who helped with the recent Mass for Shut-Ins broadcast. We’ve received lots of positive feedback about how uplifting and spiritual the broadcast was and how nice it was to see different generations of parishioners. Here is a link to the broadcast on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPY evnyrNU6zIWHDh8KJ71w Our parish Facebook page has some photos – with thanks to Bernie Paruch for taking the photos.
SPRING PILGRIMAGE TO POLAND: Thanks to everyone who attended last Sunday’s meeting. There will be follow-up information soon.
SAVE THE DATE: Please mark Thursday, February 2, on your calendar. We are planning a free café / candle-decorating workshop (gromnice candles) – sharing some of the Polish traditions for Candlemas Day. The students at the Father Greg MacLeod House are working with us on this. As with previous years, any funds we raise from donations for candles will support the humanitarian work of the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace. The candles will be blessed at Mass on Sunday, February 5.
VEHICLE PLATES: Cape Breton Polonia and Nova Scotia Polonia front vehicle plates are still available at the back of the church. $25.00 each
FUND-RAISING FOR UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE: We are using all the funds raised to support three charities that are directly helping refugees and displaced people either within Ukraine itself or who have fled to Poland. Our largest chunk of support has been going to our sister city Wałbrzych’s Ukrainian refugee assistance fund (via the CBRM). We are also supporting Caritas efforts on the ground (via the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace) and the Catholic Near East Welfare Association. We have special envelopes (marked “Ukrainian Humanitarian Assistance”) at the back of the church if you are considering making a contribution. Thank you for your support! We are now over the $31,000 mark in contributions from our parish.
FOOD CUPBOARD: Please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item (e.g. shampoo, soap, toilet paper) to church when you come to Mass. These items will help stock our food cupboard outside the Polish Village Hall. There is a significant need in our community. Thank you for any help. Thank you to Krista Ann Starzomski’s students who recently filled the Food Cupboard.
NOTES OF THANKS: The parish recently received some very nice notes of thanks from Father Greg MacLeod House, Howard House, the Community Street Nurse Program, and the Whitney Pier Youth Group for our recent support to directly help meet basic needs in our community
OUR POLISH-THEMED RADIO SEGMENTS: The Coast Radio 89.7 (weekdays at 3:50pm and 7:50pm or any time at coastalradio.ca). This coming week's topic will be handy Polish words for winter. Thank you to Kasia Jones for lending her voice to this segment and to Joe and Patricia Ryba for sponsoring this week’s segment.
We’re always looking for sponsors and volunteers. It’s $100 for a whole week. Sponsors are recognized on air – and any dedications, too (eg. if you’re sponsoring as a memorial or as a birthday or anniversary gift). The Coast is generously redirecting the sponsorships back to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society (which produces the segments), which has been a big help to the Society. If you think you might like to sponsor a week, please e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca or call 563-1226. Many thanks!
PUBLIC HEALTH PROTOCOLS – MASKS ARE STILL STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Thanks for all your kindness, patience, and co-operation through the pandemic.
COLLECTION FOR JANUARY 8: $966.00, including $75.00 for the Building Fund. Sincere thanks for your generosity.
RECENT IMO (IN MEMORY OF) CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE BUILDING FUND:
IMO Steve Melnick from Krista Ann Starzomski
IMO Leona Melski Hamper from Jean Annette White
THANKS VERY KINDLY FOR YOUR DONATIONS TO OUR PARISH : We are truly grateful for everyone’s generosity through the pandemic. If you are attending Mass, you will find a collection basket near the entrance and exit (since we are not passing around the basket due to the public health restrictions). Also, please free to use the mail: St. Mary’s Polish Parish, 21 Wesley St., Sydney, NS, B1N 2M5. Donations can also be made securely on-line at Canada Helps (which will email you an instant tax receipt): https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-marys-polish-parish/. (link to this site is provided on our parish website homepage). Thanks for your support!
FATHER RICH’S COLUMN: Niech Będzie Pochwalony Jezus Chrystus! Serdecznie Witamy ! A sincere welcome to Holy Mass celebrated by our Bishop of the Antigonish Diocese: Most Reverend Bishop Wayne Joseph Kirkpatrick. The bishop is visiting our church for the first time, and we are delighted to have him here this Sunday. After Mass, we invite all to the Polish Village Hall for our "Opłatek" gathering and meal. I wish to thank all in advance, those who decorated the hall, prepared food and desserts, agreed to take part in the "Jasełka" program and of course our greeters, lectors, choir singers, organist and altar server. I will return to Las Vegas this Monday. My plan is to return the last week of March before Palm Sunday to spend Holy Week, Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday and the rest of April with you. We are all grateful that in my absence, Father Evo will cover Sunday and Wednesday Masses and serve as parish administrator. Finally, I thank all the parish households that invited me to bless their homes renewing the "Kolęda" tradition that we have had through the years. I will send updates and more information about the Poland Pilgrimage Tour and sent the colour brochures that are being prepared in Las Vegas. Have a blessed week ahead! – Fr. Rich
