OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

FR. RICH REPORTS: Niech będzie pochwalony Jezus Chrystus! Dear Parishioners: This Sunday, I am in Dartmouth/Halifax to celebrate Polish Mass for the St. Faustyna Community at St. Anthony Church. As you may know, years ago, I was pastor for four years there. Presently there is no Polish-speaking priest available to minister to them. I will try to come down to Halifax a few times during the year when I am here in Sydney. I am grateful that Father Evo is here today to take my place. Effective this Thursday, November 3rd, he will be administrator of the parish while I am away in the States. I plan to return to Sydney on December 14th and remain for the conclusion of Advent, Christmas, New Year's, Three Kings and the "Kolęda" period to mid January. Tomorrow is the vigil of the Solemnity of All Saints, a great holy-day in Poland. Monday will begin the TRIDIUUM of All Souls "Wypominki" Masses being offered Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday(All Souls - Dzien Zaduszny). You may still return the special All Souls envelopes that are on a table at the back of the church to include your deceased loved ones in the Masses. In the place of the intercessions will read the names of the deceased with special prayer and chants. Our parish will take part in recording Mass for Shut Ins that will be broadcast on CTV on New Year's Day. Our St. Cecilia choir will sing some Mass parts and kolędy in Polish, we will also have two lectors, our altar server and members of the congregation to be in the pews to participate. The recording session will be on Saturday, December 17th at 10:30am at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church. Have a blessed week! -Fr. Rich

PRE-CHRISTMAS BAZAAR: This coming Saturday, November 5, at the Polish Village Hall 12:00pm to 4:00pm! One-of-a-kind items. $2 admission (to support St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society)

PARISH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: After Mass next Sunday, November 6. We will have financial statements, Rada elections, reports on recent developments. This will not be a long meeting, but your presence will be greatly appreciated. It will happen in the main part of the church immediately after Mass.

BASKET OF BOOKS BY POLISH NOVA SCOTIAN AUTHORS was won by Carolyn Markotich. CBU student Mervin Richard, who attends our church, drew the name for us. Thanks to everyone who filled out a free ballot for the draw

PARISH NOVEMBER LUNCH AFTER MASS will take place this time on the second Sunday, November 13. We will mark Polish Independence Day. As part of the literary challenge to Polish communities around the world (we have been directly invited to take part by Consul General Wiśniewski) – the featured author this year being Adam Mickiewicz -- we will recite together the poem/ballad Powrót Taty. HAND-MADE DISH CLOTHS – FUNDRAISER FOR UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE: These beautiful unique dishcloths have been handmade by Dee-Dee (Yurczyszyn) Jackson and her sister Brenda Yurczyszyn and were donated to us (via Marjorie Ardelli) for the Ukrainian humanitarian fund. Available small size 2 for $5, large size $3 each.

POLISH CAFE: Monday, November 7, 1:00pm Polish Café at the Polish Village Hall. We will have free recipe cards, students from Whitney Pier Memorial Middle School will show their wycinanki Polish paper art. We will also recognize the legacy book contribution in memory of Delores Starzomski. There is no charge for this gathering, and it will be wonderful if you could attend.

UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE: Thank you for your continued support in the midst of this terrible human suffering. Special envelopes are at the back of the church. Or you can contribute via our CanadaHelps page. We are supporting our sister city Wałbrzych’s refugee assistance fund, the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, and the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace.

FOOD CUPBOARD: Please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item (e.g. shampoo, soap, toilet paper) to church when you come to Mass. These items will help stock our food cupboard outside the Polish Village Hall. There is a significant need in our community. Thank you for any help.

ALTAR SOCIETY: Thanks so much to Peggy Ryba and Lynette Ryba for being on in October. Our lead volunteers for November are Ursula Melski and Eileen Fagan-Steele.

OUR POLISH-THEMED RADIO SEGMENTS: The Coast Radio 89.7 (weekdays at 3:50pm and 7:50pm or any time at coastalradio.ca). This coming week's topic will be Polish customs to honour the deceased at this time of year. Special thanks to guest Bob Lewandowski. This week’s segment is dedicated to all the deceased family members of listeners.
We’re always looking for sponsors and volunteers. It’s $100 for a whole week. POLISH CUSTOMS FOR OBSERVING ALL SAINTS DAY AND ALL SOULS DAY:
The website ehow.com provides an excellent summary of how people who are connected to the Polish heritage usually mark these important days:
1.Participate in the tradition of Zaduszki, lighting candles at and visiting the graves of deceased relatives. The candles, znicze, of All Saints Day are uniquely designed to burn for hours as a prayerful symbol of light to help the souls of the dead find their way. Cemeteries are also decorated with small lanterns. The metal covers of the lanterns help to protect the flames from the wind.
2.Bring fall flowers or wreaths to place on the graves. In Poland yellow and white chrysanthemums are traditionally used to decorate graves as are asters. Since the Polish wreaths and flowers of All Saints’ Day are nearly exclusively made of chrysanthemums, these flowers aren't used to celebrate more festive occasions. Kwiat and znicze (flower and candle) markets are set up outside the gates of some graveyards.
3.Join the silent crowds meditating amid the lights. The thousands of candles lighting the cemeteries creates a glow which can be seen from far away. The large cemeteries of Krakow, Rakowicki and Salwator, are particularly populated on All Saints’ Day. Mausoleums of many famous artists and philosophers can be found in these cemeteries alongside the plots of many well established Polish families.
4.Ensure that prayers will be said for your loved ones by bringing Wypominki to a priest. Wypominki is essentially a piece of paper with the name of the deceased written upon it. Traditionally the paper has a black border and serves as a prayer intention or request.
5.Serve food to the poor. The tradition in Poland is to set places for the souls of dead family members. Food is placed on the plates and set aside to serve to the poor.
