Uroczystość Zesłania Ducha Świętego / Pentecost: Pentecost – literally the fiftieth day (after Easter) – marks the descent of the Holy Spirit among the apostles and other followers of Jesus. Typical church images of the Pentecost show the Virgin Mary seated with the apostles. On this day, we pray for wisdom, piety, and discernment, among other virtues. “Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love.” “Przyjdź, Duchu Święty, i zapal w nas płomień.” This day is also considered the birthday of the church – and it has a special significance for parishes like ours that contribute to the cultural and linguistic diversity of their dioceses.
Zielone Świątki: The week of Pentecost is also known as Green Week in the Polish tradition. It’s common, especially in the countryside, to see extra greenery around altars and around religious images at home. Prayers are said for the current growing season and for the health of members of our community. This year, in particular, as millions of people face starvation – in part because shipments of grain are being blocked by the invasion of Ukraine – let’s pray for solidarity and hope for everyone around the world who is suffering. Lord, bring better days

OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS
HEARTFELT THANKS! So much gratitude is extended to everyone who worked hard over the past week on pierogi. It’s a big job you did! A remarkable 366 dozen were prepared. At the time of writing, almost all the pierogi had been purchased – there may still be a few dozen left. They are $12 a dozen. This is a fund-raiser for the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society.
A NOTE ON LAST WEEK’S POLISH CAFÉ: Thanks to everyone who contributed, food, songs, participated in the trivia, and more. It was an uplifting atmosphere!
RADIO SEGMENTS: Our next round of radio segments for The Coast on Polish culture and language are being recorded tomorrow morning. A couple of our weeks are still looking for sponsors (The Coast is generously redirecting the sponsorships back to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society, which has been a big help to the Society). It’s $100 to sponsor a whole week (the segments are broadcasts weekdays at 3:50pm and 7:50pm). Sponsors’ names (and any memorials or greetings – eg. Anniversaries) are announced at the end of the segments. If you think you might like to sponsor a week, please speak with Tom Urbaniak.
UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE: A big thank you for the parish’s generosity for Ukrainian humanitarian assistance and to friends of the parish. So far, we have contributed $20,000 to Wałbrzych’s Ukrainian refugee assistance fund (via CBRM); $3,600 to Caritas partners (via the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace); and $3,600 to the Catholic Near East Welfare Association. There are envelopes at the back of the church marked “Ukrainian Humanitarian Assistance.” You can also make a cheque to St. Mary’s Polish Parish and mark “Ukrainian Humanitarian Assistance” in the memo line. Or make a designated, secure donation on the parish’s CanadaHelps page: www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-marys-polish-parish/ God bless! Thank you so much for your caring and support! Donations will be included in your tax receipt at the end of the year.
FOOD CUPBOARD: Please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item (e.g. shampoo, soap, toilet paper) to church when you come to Mass. These items will help stock our food cupboard outside the Polish Village Hall.
PUBLIC HEALTH PROTOCOLS – MASKS STILL STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
ST. MICHAEL’S POLISH BENEFIT SOCIETY is reaching out for new members. You do not have to attend monthly meetings. Only members elected to the board are expected to attend monthly meetings, but all members are kept in the loop on activities, invited to participate in various projects, have a say in the Society’s overall direction, and a vote at the Annual General Meeting. The next AGM is June 26 – and will include additional information about forthcoming capital improvements and new cultural exhibits at the Polish Village Hall. A membership form is included with the paper version of the bulletin. Membership is open to everyone who has an interest in promoting Polish heritage in Cape Breton and who supports the cultural and community-service mandate of the Society. Founded in 1909, the Society owns and operates the Polish Village Hall, was instrumental in getting the Nova Scotia Legislature to establish Polish Heritage Month, helps with food security and other community outreach, works closely with the CBRM on the Polish twin city initiative, was responsible for the Glace Bay Polish pioneers monument (2020), and works on various other projects.
SCHOLARSHIP FUND: At its recent meeting, the Finance Committee decided to convene a working group that will meet once or twice to recommend to the Finance Committee and Rada the structure/criteria for the scholarship fund made possible by Father Rich’s recent donation. If you would like to be part of this discussion, please call 902-563-1226
COLLECTION FOR May 29: $715.00 Thank you very kindly for your generosity.
THANKS VERY KINDLY FOR YOUR DONATIONS TO OUR PARISH : We are truly grateful for everyone’s generosity through the pandemic. If you are attending Mass, you will find a collection basket near the entrance and exit (since we are not passing around the basket due to the public health restrictions). Also, please free to use the mail: St. Mary’s Polish Parish, 21 Wesley St., Sydney, NS, B1N 2M5. Donations can also be made securely on-line at Canada Helps (which will email you an instant tax receipt): https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-marys-polish-parish/. (link to this site is provided on our parish website homepage). Thanks for your support!
RADA NOMINATIONS: Parish Annual General Meeting will be held in the fall this year (as in the past two years). The Nominations Committee had an initial meeting and has put out the call for nominations for Rada. To discuss nominations, the work of Rada, if you might be interested or would like to recommend someone, please speak with Marjorie Ardelli, Janet Hawthorne, or Krista Ann Starzomski.
