OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

A purple candle will be lit today in front of the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa to mark the feast day this coming week of St. Maksymilian Kolbe – Aug.14. St. Maksymilian Kolbe (1894-1941) was a Polish priest active in the Catholic media and in missionary and charitable work. Interned in the Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp, he insisted on replacing a condemned prisoner who was being sent to his death in the starvation bunker. Father Kolbe, who had a strong devotion to Mary, was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 10, 1982. Franciszek Gajowniczek, the condemned prisoner whose life Father Kolbe had saved, was present for the canonization.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY: Many readers of the bulletin know Sajive Kocchar, who has been videographer at many of our parish events over the past 10 years and a great person to work with. Sadly, Sajive’s mother, Ingrid, passed away last week at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Our parish extends prayers and condolences to Sajive and his family. NEXT SUNDAY: MATKA BOSKA ZIELNA (OUR LADY OF THE HERBS): traditional Polish name for the Feast Day of the Assumption of Mary. Herbs and vegetables are blessed on this day.  Next Sunday, if you can, please bring fresh produce to bless. We will place large baskets in front of the altar and donate the produce to Loaves and Fishes.

FOOD CUPBOARD: If you are attending Mass this Sunday, we would be so grateful if you could bring a non-perishable or personal care item for the Food Cupboard. In particular, personal care items (soap, shampoo, etc) appear to be especially needed at this time. Also, nutritious non-perishable breakfast items like cereal and peanut butter. Thanks for all your help! God bless!

September 15 at 10:30am: Zoom lecture with our twin city (Walbrzych) Mayor Roman Szelemej
September 19 after Mass: Exhibit: Historic Homes of Polish Cape Breton. We will also have a book-signing with our featured Polish Nova Scotian author William Kowalski. He will sign copies of one of his books The Best Polish Restaurant in Buffalo
Evenings of September 20 and 27: Polish film nights at Boardmore Theatre – free admission.On September 20 we will have Poletown Lives! and on September 27 we will have Andrzej Wajda’s Man of Marble

WEEKDAY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN CAPE BRETON: The Coast Radio: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). And archived at coastalradio.ca. It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Would you consider sponsoring a whole week of our radio segments for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Dziekujemy! And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready. No previous experience required, and you do not have to be a Polish speaker. Our radio theme for this coming week will be the Polish customs for the upcoming Feast Day of Matka Boska Zielna.
