OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

NIEDZIELA MORZA / SEA SUNDAY: “Byłem nieznajomym i powitałeś mnie!” “I Was a Stranger and You Welcomed Me”. A Note from the Diocese:  July 11 is Sea Sunday:  a day each year for people to pray and give thanks for those who earn their livings from and on the sea. An estimated 90 per cent of goods on our store shelves are there through the efforts of crews aboard ships who often spend months at sea weathering storms and working long, physical hours for relatively low pay and little vacation. Services to seafarers have become more crucial, and more difficult, during the COVID pandemic. With isolation protocols, crews can be stranded on board ship unable to replenish supplies or communicate with their families back home.  This past April, Strait area businesses and communities provided donations of winter hats and other essentials to crew aboard a quarantined oil tanker near Port Hawkesbury. “Given the difficult circumstances we find ourselves in, this gesture of kindness and your gifts today, not only raises morale but makes us all realize that there are those ashore who understand the role we play and more importantly care about the position we now find ourselves in,” the vessel captain wrote in a thank you letter.

ANNIVERSARIES: July is a month of many anniversaries, and we would love to pray for you in church! Please drop a note or even a word before Mass and we can add a prayer.

And a big “Sto lat” to Stephanie Black, who celebrated her birthday this past week.

Please continue to pray for John Doiron, father of Howie and father-in-law of Angela, who is enduring a serious illness.

FOOD CUPBOARD: If you are attending Mass this Sunday, we would be so grateful if you could bring a non-perishable or personal care item for the Food Cupboard. In particular, personal care items appear to be especially needed at this time. Also, nutritious non-perishable breakfast items like cereal and peanut butter. Thanks for all your help! God bless!

UPCOMING LECTURE: Please mark Wednesday, September 15, at 10:30am on your calendar! Roman Szełemej, the mayor of our twin city, Walbrzych, will join us to discuss leadership and community development as we emerge from the pandemic. There will be lots of practical ideas. Most of our parishioners had the pleasure to meet Mayor Szelemej when he joined us for Mass, a meal, and other activities during his 2019 visit.

POSTERS FOR NOVA SCOTIA POLISH HERITAGE MONTH: We are including colour, paper copies – inserts in the bulletin. We have larger versions, too, that we’d be happy to share if you’d like to put the poster up somewhere.  Please spread the word. We’re encouraging businesses and groups to acknowledge the month in some way!

PARISH POLISH COOK BOOKS – SECOND PRINTING! Now available: These are the 100th anniversary cookbooks from 2013, featuring recipes and stories from many parishioners. The cookbook project was coordinated by Shari McKay. Copies are $10 each and we’d be happy to send copies anywhere. Please be in touch: 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca

MURAL PROJECT: Dear Friends: Please suggest Polish Cape Breton homes – standing or no longer standing – to feature in a mural project for NS Polish Heritage Month (a project of the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society) – working with artist Emily Sheppard. (contact: 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca). The mural will have a home at the Polish Village Hall! We will do an exhibit of sketches during NS Polish Heritage Month!

WEEKDAY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN CAPE BRETON: The Coast Radio: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). And archived at coastalradio.ca. It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Would you consider sponsoring a whole week of our radio segments for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Dziekujemy! And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready. No previous experience required, and you do not have to be a Polish speaker. Our radio theme for this coming week will be the Polish currency, złoty. Thank you to Rosalie Starzomski for lending her voice this week. And thank you to this week’s sponsor, Jean Annette White, IMO the Kieƈ and Niedzielski families (correction on a previously reported IMO).

AMRITPAL SINGH will be working part-time for the next eight weeks on sprucing up the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society’s empty lot at the corner of Victoria Road and Franklin Street, and also the Kolonia Immigrant Heritage Parkette at the bottom of Bryan St. Welcome, Amrit! This is part of a CBU work-study program. The long-term vision for the Victoria/Franklin site (contingent on funding) is a “Polish Twin City Pocket Park” to honour the CBRM/Walbrzych connection!

CBC RADIO SERIES ON BREAD: Thanks to Peggy Ryba and Ursula Melski for doing recent interviews about Polish breads! Here’s Ursula’s photo of what got baked during the interviews!

LAST SUNDAY’S COLLECTION INFORMATION WILL BE INCLUDED IN NEXT WEEK’S BULLETIN. Thank you so much for all your generosity. Bog zaplac!

THANKS VERY KINDLY FOR YOUR DONATIONS TO OUR PARISH DURING THE PANDEMIC: We are truly grateful for everyone’s generosity through the pandemic. If you are able to make a donation, the parish’s mailing address is St. Mary’s Polish Parish, 21 Wesley St., Sydney, NS, B1N 2M5. Donations can be made securely on-line at Canada Helps (which will email you an instant tax receipt):   https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-marys-polish-parish/. (link to this site is provided on our parish website homepage). Thanks for your support!

FREE VEGETABLE SEEDS: We still have some vegetable seeds (near the exit) – a small thank you gift to mark the recent 5th anniversary of our rebuilt church. Please feel free to take a package!
