Our church is temporarily closed due to the general provincial shutdown to stop the spread of COVID-19. Let’s pray that it won’t be too much longer until we’re back together! Please stay in touch if you need any assistance at all. Please know that your parish is always here to help, or even just available for conversation (902-574-4193). **On Sunday, you’ll be able to find Mass, celebrated by Father Dennis, here: www.sainttheresasydney.com/

FOOD CUPBOARD: Thanks so much for helping to keep our Food Cupboard in front of the Polish Village Hall filled! This is really making a difference in the community.

CONDOLENCES AND PRAYERS:
Our parish extends sincere condolences and expression of support to Lennie Wludyka on the recent death of his daughter, Joan Wludyka Poirrier. Wieczny odpoczynek racz jej dac Panie …
We also extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Brad Tynski, who passed away as a result of a tragic workplace accident in Alberta last week. Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole family.
And we mourn the passing of Angus “Angie” Mombourquette, husband of the late Andzia Siwak Mombourquette, who likewise has family in our parish, including niece Stephanie Black. May his soul rest in peace.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF REV. PHYLLIS MARSH: Earlier this week, we shared the following note with our colleagues in the KAIROS ecumenical group -- representatives of Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox congregations who work together on common issues in the community: We are mourning the unexpected passing on Sunday of our dear friend Rev. Phyllis Marsh, pastor of St. Philip's African Orthodox Church. In many ways, Rev. Phyllis was pastor and mentor to the whole community -- a wise mentor, a generous spirit, and a compassionate but determined leader who showed the ways of justice. Her acts of kindness were infinite. Her faith was an example. She really did put the Gospel into practice. Rev. Phyllis's own physical pain in recent years never stopped her. Her remarkable life story only made her stronger. There was a light within her -- an immense resilience coupled with the skills of leadership, the well-studied knowledge of the human condition, and the gifts of eloquence. Although we miss her deeply, we feel she is with us still. Thank you, Rev. Phyllis, from the bottom of our hearts. Wieczny odpoczynek ...

IN PRAYERFUL SOLIDARITY WITH OUR MUSLIM FRIENDS: The following note was sent to Dr. Arsalan Raza, imam of the Cape Breton Muslim Society, and a good friend of our parish (we have worked together on various projects): Dear Arsalan: The members of St. Mary's Polish Parish extend to you our friendship and prayerful solidarity. We were horrified by the senseless and horrifying act of hatred that befell the Afzaal family and the Muslim community in London, Ontario. We know this is affecting Muslim communities across Canada. We grieve for the deceased members of the Afzaal family. We stand with our Muslim brothers and sisters at this time and always. We will do whatever we can to resist and to call out hatred, and to work for communities of love.

DESTINATION CAPE BRETON will be working with us to develop a poster for Nova Scotia Polish Heritage Month called “Experience Polish Cape Breton!” It will be a busy, eclectic poster with sites, suggestions for self-guided walking tours, recipes, etc. Please send along your ideas and we’ll try to fit them in!

PARISH POLISH COOK BOOKS – SECOND PRINTING! Now available: These are the 100th anniversary cookbooks from 2013, featuring recipes and stories from many parishioners. The cookbook project was coordinated by Shari McKay. Copies are $10 each and we’d be happy to send copies anywhere. Please be in touch: 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca

THE POLISH CAPE BRETONERS COLOURING BOOK: Additional copies are available. And once again, we’d be happy to send them anywhere for you. They’re $10 each.

MURAL PROJECT: Dear Friends: Please suggest Polish Cape Breton homes – standing or no longer standing – to feature in a mural project for NS Polish Heritage Month (a project of the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society) – working with artist Emily Sheppard. (contact: 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca). The mural will have a home at the Polish Village Hall!

NEW WEBSITE FOR POLISH VILLAGE HALL: polishvillage.ca. There’s even a small, secure shop on-line! Some photos and information about the Society are included as well. Please check it out and make suggestions or share photos. We’ll keep improving it!

WEEKDAY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN CAPE BRETON: The Coast Radio: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). And archived at coastalradio.ca. It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Would you consider sponsoring a whole week of our radio segments for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Dziekujemy! And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready. No previous experience required, and you do not have to be a Polish speaker. This is a great way for us to bring forward members of our community, and to promote and share Polish language and culture in our region. Our radio theme for this coming week will be the Polish Cape Breton homes mural project. Emily Sheppard will be the guest. And thank you to Jean Annette White, in memory of deceased members of the Kieƈ and Niedzielski families, for being this week’s sponsor!

ST. MICHAEL’S POLISH BENEFIT SOCIETY ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: Sunday evening June 27 at 7:00pm by Zoom. We’ll discuss some exciting long-term “creative-hub” plans for the Polish Village Hall, including a consultant’s report that is currently being drafted (with thanks to ACOA for consultant funding).

MEMBERSHIP IN THE ST. MICHAEL’S POLISH BENEFIT SOCIETY – RENEWALS AND NEW MEMBERS -- A WARM WELCOME: Membership is open to any person of any background with an interest in Polish heritage and culture and who supports the mission and objectives of the Society. It’s the oldest Polish organization of its kind in Canada (founded in 1909!). The membership fee is $30 a year. Monthly meetings are only obligatory for members who have been elected to the board, but all members receive periodic updates, can vote at the Annual General Meeting, and are welcome to participate on projects and working groups as their time permits. You do not have to live in the area to be a member – it’s a way of maintaining a connection and continuing support. For current, members this is also the time of year to renew. Many thanks! You can find an on-line membership form at https://polishvillage.ca/membership-in-the-society/

FOOD GARDEN ON THE PARISH GROUNDS: Once again, we’re working with Pathways, an excellent charity in our community that works with people who are living with mental illness. We’ve always had a great rapport with their team, who are friendly and helpful. The vegetables will be for community meals and also to help Loaves and Fishes. Planting has begun, including green and yellow beans, lettuce, cabbage, red onion, leeks, radish, zucchini.

A RADIO INITIATIVE THAT BRINGS TOGETHER POLISH CANADIANS: Thomas Lukaszuk, who lived in Cape Breton as a teenager, went on to become deputy premier of Alberta, and is now back in the private sector, regularly stays in touch with us. He recently introduced us to Joanna Ciapka-Sangster, who co-produces a very dynamic radio program out of Edmonton that works to bring together Polish Canadians – news, culture, commentary – a very fresh approach. You can listen to it Sunday evenings at 9:00pm our time (6:00pm Edmonton time) at www.cjsr.com ,

SUMMER EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY – TWIN CITY POCKET PARK: artist / landscaper (honouring our twin city, Walbrzych). This opportunity is through CBU and is open to CBU students.
