CHANGE IN WEDNESDAY MASS TIME FOR THE WINTER MONTHS: 4 p.m.: Our Wednesday evening Mass is at 4 p.m. Novena to Our Lady of Czestochowa follows as usual. Father Paul has effected this change out of consideration for people who may find it difficult to drive in the dark, especially in inclement winter conditions.

LUNCH AFTER MASS TODAY DOWNSTAIRS: EVERYONE IS WELCOME: Also, please be reminded that we are collecting non-perishable items today during lunch downstairs as part of our STO DARÓW Centenary Service Initiative.

NEXT SUNDAY: SPECIAL PRAYER/BLESSING TO AID US IN OUR SERVICE-TO-THE COMMUNITY INITIATIVES AS PART OF THE PARISH CENTENARY: Our Sto Darów [100 Gifts] Service Initiative runs the whole year. It involves the following:
• Collection of non-perishable items at each parish lunch and event for contribution to the local food bank (goal: 100 items at each event).
• 100 acts of service to the community either collectively as a parish, through small groups on behalf of the parish, or by individuals on behalf of the parish.
• Inviting other faith communities to undertake a similar initiative.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PRAYER: Lord, thank you for the great gifts of this world, especially for the great gifts of each other. And as we grow in the community, through our love for one another, give us the strength to accept the challenge of service. Help us to realize the needs of Your children and deepen our commitment to meet those needs. Never let us become preoccupied with our human accomplishments, but teach us to know that all things come from You. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

A REQUEST FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE – MATERIAL FOR 100th ANNIVERSARY: Cape Breton University’s ECECP (East and Central European Communities Project) wishes to borrow media such as cassette recordings, video tapes, and CDs related in any way to Cape Breton’s Polish community. These would be transposed and placed on the project website, following appropriate permissions being obtained. Please contact researcher Patricia Nalepa at ECECP@hotmail.ca or 563-1226 for more information or to donate materials. Anything lent will be digitized by a member of the staff at Cape Breton University; the original hard copy will be returned to the lender. If you would like a copy of the digitized format, please include a USB key or blank CD when sharing materials. A Centenary/Polish Exhibit is planned to be ready for July 1, 2013. Anything contributed would remain part of the exhibit for several months and then returned. These items would not be actually gathered until the week before the opening of the exhibit, but the project wishes to examine and inventory items at this time. Categories include Liturgies, Dance, Music, Embroidery, Cooking, Immigration, Festivals, and Community Milestones and Celebrations. If you have an item or a story that might fit into any of these categories, if you wish to suggest an additional category, or if you wish to lend any items for the exhibit, please contact Patricia Nalepa at ECECP@hotmail.ca (563-1226).

STEUBENVILLE ATLANTIC YOUTH CONFERENCE: This youth conference weekend, August 2-4, 2013, is held annually at St. F.X. University, Antigonish, and is open to students Grades 9-12. It is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Halifax with the support and encouragement of our own Bishop Dunn. Last summer, almost 800 students from the Atlantic provinces attended and enjoyed themselves immensely. The conference is grounded in our Catholic faith but includes plenty of music and fun. If you are interested in attending, please contact Father Paul at 564-4355. It’s a great way to learn more about your faith and meet many other young people. Registration should take place before the end of March, so please sign up early.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER PLANNING MEETING: Our parish is asked to send representatives to a meeting of various parishes being held on Thursday, February 7, at 2 p.m. St. Theresa’s Church (in the church). The World Day of Prayer is a longstanding ecumenical laywomen’s initiative. If you can attend, or are considering attending, please speak with Aggie Stephenson (567-2305)

THE POLISH TRADITION OF WAYSIDE SHRINES: An unmistakable feature of Polish towns, villages, and rural areas – and of areas with large Polish populations elsewhere in the world – are handcrafted wayside shrines.  In fact, they sometimes denote old Polish settlements, such as the ones near Wilno, Ontario, or Polonia, Wisconsin. These are of course found in other countries as well, but visitors to Poland often note their frequency and the way in which they have been personalized or made to tell something of the story of the place. Wayside shrines can be simple or very elaborate. They are often dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, but many saints are depicted, as people ask for intercession for peace, a safe journey, an adequate harvest, or for the repose of the soul of individuals who may have died near the location. These shrines are emblematic of the faith of the Polish people – a faith that has sustained them through times of great difficulty.

Dzień ten jest dla chorych i pracowników służby zdrowia, dla wiernych chrześcijan i dla wszystkich osób dobrej woli owocnym czasem modlitwy, współuczestnictwa i ofiary z cierpienia dla dobra Kościoła oraz skierowanym do wszystkich wezwaniem, aby rozpoznali w chorym bracie święte Oblicze Chrystusa, który przez cierpienie, śmierć i zmartwychwstanie dokonał dzieła zbawienia ludzkości.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: 11 February 2013, the liturgical memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Twenty-first World Day of the Sick will be solemnly celebrated at the Marian Shrine of Altötting. This day represents for the sick, for health care workers, for the faithful and for all people of goodwill a privileged time of prayer, of sharing, of offering one’s sufferings for the good of the Church, and a call for all to recognize in the features of their suffering brothers and sisters the Holy Face of Christ, who, by suffering, dying and rising has brought about the salvation of mankind.  - Pope Benedict XVI
