OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS
DZIĘKUJEMY NASZYM WETERANOM / THANK YOU TO OUR VETERANS: May God bless you. We pray for all veterans, including the deceased veterans of St. Mary’s Polish Parish. In tribute to them, the following is the refrain from Czerwone Maki na Monte Cassino – literally Red Poppies on Monte Cassino – by Feliks Konarski, which is almost like a Polish version of In Flanders Fields:
Czerwone maki na Monte Cassino
Zamiast rosy piły polską krew...
Po tych makach szedł żołnierz i ginął,
Lecz od śmierci silniejszy był gniew!
Przejdą lata i wieki przeminą,
Pozostaną ślady dawnych dni!..
I tylko maki na Monte Cassino
Czerwieńsze będą, bo z polskiej wzrosną krwi
REMEMBRANCE DAY: Today, we will pray for veterans of St. Mary’s Polish Parish and all veterans. Thank you for the recent corrections and additions to the list of veterans
REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY AT THE PIER LEGION: to be held today at 1:00pm. There will be wreaths laid from St. Mary’s Polish Parish and the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society.
RINGING OF BELLS AS A CALL FOR PEACE: At sundown today, in common with churches across the country, and at the request of the Royal Canadian Legion, we will ring bells (chimes), as a plea for peace in our world. Módlmy się o pokój. Let us pray for peace.
POLSKI PIĄTEK: Next Polski Piatek (free social, cultural gathering – all welcome) is tentatively scheduled for the evening of Friday, December 7. We will learn/share Polish words and customs associated with the Christmas season in a relaxed and fun setting.
DZIĘKUJEMY: Thank you to everyone who helped with the pre-Christmas bazaar. Thanks as well for the wonderful baked goods!
THANK YOU for the non-perishable items last Sunday
WHITNEY PIER COMMUNITY KITCHEN PROJECT: Meals on Wednesdays from 11:30am to 1:00pm in our church (Sala 1050). All welcome for a meal. Free of charge or donate what you can. Thank you so kindly to the volunteers and sponsors.
TODAY IS THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF POLAND REGAINING INDEPENDENCE: Some of the hymns have been chosen with this important occasion in mind. The new Atlantic Canada District of the Canadian Polish Congress, which is headquartered in Sydney, has been encouraged to honour the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining independence with a special legacy project in our communities in the next year. In collaboration with CBU and Prof. Joanna Pylat of the Polish University Abroad (who visited us in 2014), and who will be here for a longer time next spring, we are looking at a “participatory archiving” project in May 2019 to collect, identify, and interpret previously unknown records related to the Polish community in our region and make sure these are accessible in the Beaton Institute for generations to come
SWIĘTO NIEPODLEGŁOŚCI – NOVEMBER 11 -- A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND HOPE: November 11th, the day of the armistice ending World War I in 1918, is also the day when Poland became an independent country again after a long period of occupation. Some of the ancestors of our parishioners were involved in that struggle. As such, for people of Polish heritage, November 11th is a holiday of both remembrance and hope. For the 123 years before 1918, Poland had been partitioned between Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Germany/Prussia. Between 1918 and 1939, Poland maintained its independence. However, the beginning of World War II on September 1, 1939, saw the country invaded first by Germany and then by the Soviet Union. The first Chief of State of the post-1918 independent Poland was the legendary Józef Piłsudski. For many years his portrait graced our very own Polish Village Hall. This old portrait was found during renovations and is once again displayed in the hall.
VISIT OF THE NEW POLISH CONSUL GENERAL DARIUSZ WIŚNIEWSKI: Sunday, November 25. We will have lunch with him after Mass that day, in our Sala 1050. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
TRANSLATION OF TODAY’S FIRST READING FROM THE BOOK OF KINGS: In those days, Elijah the prophet went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the entrance of the city, a widow was gathering sticks there; he called out to her, "Please bring me a small cupful of water to drink." She left to get it, and he called out after her,"Please bring along a bit of bread." She answered, "As the Lord, your God, lives, I have nothing baked; there is only a handful of flour in my jar and a little oil in my jug. Just now I was collecting a couple of sticks, to go in and prepare something for myself and my son; when we have eaten it, we shall die." Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid. Go and do as you propose. But first make me a little cake and bring it to me. Then you can prepare something for yourself and your son. For the Lord, the God of Israel, says, 'The jar of flour shall not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, until the day when the Lord sends rain upon the earth.'" She left and did as Elijah had said. She was able to eat for a year, and he and her son as well; the jar of flour did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, as the Lord had foretold through Elijah
“Sunday Mass is at the heart of the Church’s life. There we encounter the Risen Lord, we listen to His Word, we are nourished at His table, and thus we become Church.” – A recent message on Twitter from Pope Francis
