FATHER RICH REPORTS:
Niech bedzie pochwalony Jezus Chrystus!
Dear Parishioners and Friends,
I write this column today aboard the Star Princess cruise ship in Glacier Bay, Alaska. I have been on cruise since Saturday afternoon when we left Vancouver. In Vancouver, we visited the Polish Days Festival at St. Casimir’s Parish. The day was cool but sunny, and they had a good turnout and excellent food. The scenery on Canada’s west coast as well as Alaska is very beautiful. I’ve seen a lot of wildlife and of course glaciers. All of this is a reflection of the beauty of God’s creation. This is the first time I have ever been on a cruise ship (Newfoundland ferry doesn’t count). I can see the potential that Sydney may have as a cruise destination. This is something that our Polish church and our neighbours at Holy Ghost could hopefully take advantage of as the cruise tourism grows in Cape Breton as in many other places. Yesterday, we spent a day in Skagway, Alaska (population just over 1,000 and learned that last year they had over 1.1 million cruise-ship visitors!
Our cruise ends Saturday morning when we will fly back in the afternoon to Las Vegas via Seattle. I am scheduled to return on Tuesday with five of my Polish-speaking Las Vegas parishioners who wanted to see Cape Breton and Nova Scotia before I leave. They will probably attend Mass Friday evening and also attend the reception at the Polish Village Hall on Saturday evening. They return to Las Vegas flying from Halifax Sunday afternoon. I will leave by car either Sunday evening or Monday morning.
I wish to thank Fr. Joe Mroz, SJ, for accepting the invitation to come to Sydney and allow me to take vacation time for two weeks. I hope he enjoyed his stay and may come back again, perhaps even as a future pastor if that is God’s will. Fr. Joe’s last Mass will be this Wednesday evening. He will go on to spend some time with his mother in Dartmouth and then Montreal and Guelph, Ontario.
Finally, as this is Father’s Day, I wish all our fathers God’s blessings of health and happiness with the love of your children and grandchildren. May all have a blessed week!

CAPE BRETON POLISH TARTAN – next phase: The Rada invited the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to take charge of renewing tartan sales and to use the profits to support the hall and Polish cultural development. The Society is setting up a steering committee and has reached out to the non-profit social-enterprise incubator Common Good Solutions to help with a platform for on-line sales, to develop/promote some new products, and to use the products to spark the interest of tourists in the Polish community on our island. This will be happening gradually over the coming months and years. More news to follow.
IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING MASSES: Please note that due to pastoral changes, the final Sunday 4:00pm Mass will be on June 24. Discussions are underway about the timing of the Sunday morning Mass
COMMUNITY KITCHEN PROJECT: Start-date of the six month pilot has now been set for Wednesday, September 26, and continuing on subsequent Wednesdays, 11:30am to 1:00pm here at St. Mary’s Polish Church. Free or pay what you can. With the other participating faith communities, we’ll be offering a weekly sponsorship opportunity of $250, which can be designated as a gift in someone’s honour or in memory of a loved one
OGRODEK / PARISH FOOD GARDEN: With the frosts hopefully behind us (!) it will soon be time to plant the parish food garden, If you would like to be part of a couple of hours of planting, please let Tom Urbaniak know (563-1226), and we will organize a mutually convenient day! This year, much of the produce from the garden will go toward the Community Kitchen in our church.
ST. BROTHER ALBERT (Albert Chmielowski): Feast day June 17: On August 25, 1887, he joined the Third Order of St. Francis. He chose to live in a public shelter (in Krakow, Poland), where he served meals and provided clothing and basic necessities to people who had nothing. He helped all, regardless of religion or culture. Although he had a promising career as an artist, he left this work to set up homeless shelters and other organizations for the poor. With Blessed Sister Bernardina, Brother Albert set up an affiliated women’s organization. He argued that one of the greatest tragedies of our time is that people who have a lot often ignore – sometimes willfully ignore – those who are in need. He was canonized in 1983 by St. John Paul II, who said that Brother Albert’s example had greatly inspired him in his own vocation
“Ours is the gigantic task of overcoming all evil with good, always trying amidst the problems of life to place trust in God, knowing that his grace supplies strength to human weakness. We must oppose every form of hatred with the invincible power of Christ’s love”. – St. John Paul II
