OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

FATHER RICH REPORTS:
Niech Bedzie Pochwalony Jezus Chrystus! Praise be Jesus Christ!
Dear Parishioners & Friends:
This coming Wednesday (February 14th), we will observe the special day that marks the beginning of the holy season of Lent. Lent in Polish is called ”Wielki Post" which in English is translated as the “Great Fast”. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the only two days of fast (restricting size and number of meals) and abstinence (refraining from eating of meat or by-products of meat). It is a day of penance and reflection as we have blessed ash that reminds us of our mortality. It is marked on our foreheads with either the words “Remember you are dust and into dust you will return” or “Repent and believe the Good News” (Gospel). Lent should be a time of reflection on the seriousness of life and our eternal destination as we focus on the forty days of our Lord’s prayer and fasting in the desert that prepared Him for His earthly mission. Traditional practices of Lent are participation in the Way (Stations) of the Cross. We will have devotion every Friday after the 6:30 pm Mass. We will also have two special Ways of the Cross for PREP children twice during Lent. Another Polish custom of Lent is singing of the Lenten Lamentations (Gorzkie Żale). We will sing the Lamentations in English every Wednesday of Lent after the 6:30pm Mass in place of the Novena to Our Lady of Czestochowa. Very important in Lent is taking advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) which allows us to cleanse ourselves of our serious sins and experiencing the grace of God’s mercy and forgiveness. May all have a blessed week !

IMO Bronia Markotich from Nellie Tynski

LUNCH AFTER MASS TODAY: marking the Sunday before the start of Lent. There is no charge, and everyone is welcome. Please see the bulletin insert for the Polish pop-up tutorial on Zapusty/Tłusty Czwartek. The lunch will include some of the traditional pączki. Thanks to fellow parishioners who brought food for today’s lunch.

LOAVES AND FISHES:Thank you to everyone who brought a non-perishable item for Loaves and Fishes today. There is a collection box at the entrance to the lunch area.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE LIBRARY IN SALA 1050: Adam McCormick has been doing the carpentry for the library, and it’s very good! Please have a look at the progress during lunch today!

KITCHEN CONSTRUCTION: Rada representatives met this week with the province, regarding approval of the kitchen design. We will be making a formal submission shortly. We will also be requesting several fellow parishioners to take upcoming food handling courses offered by the Department. If you can spare a day to do that, it would be much appreciated. Please speak with any member of the Rada.

RADA MEETING: There will be a short Rada meeting after the parish lunch today to review some kitchen equipment estimates and authorize purchases.

CANADIAN POLISH CONGRESS: Discussions are underway with Cape Breton and Halifax Polonia organizations and the Canadian Polish Congress national office to have Atlantic Canada designated as a district of the Canadian Polish Congress. This would give our organizations access to more support from the national level. The Rada and St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society are supporting this. The Atlantic region is the only major region in Canada that is not attached to the Congress. The idea is that the Atlantic district would have its address/base here in Whitney Pier at the Polish Village Hall. District meetings would happen only occasionally as needed, and we would host a district workshop (with CBU support) every two years. If you would like to be part of these discussions, please speak with any member of the Rada.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY DANCE: Polish Village Hall, March 10th, 9:00pm-1:00am, proceeds to support the work of the Society/hall. Tickets will be $10 each (on sale next week) and will include a late-evening mini-buffet. There will be other unique features, too.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER, ANNUAL ECUMENICAL WOMEN'S GATHERING: Service on March 2nd at 2:00pm at Westmount United Church. Everyone is welcome. Thank you to Deanie Morykot, who is the official representative of our parish.

PLEASE CONSIDER SPONSORING A PEACOCK FEATHER FOR $100 AT THE POLISH VILLAGE HALL: Your name, or the name of a person in whose memory you designate, will be permanently inscribed on the wall below a painted peacock feather downstairs in the Polish Village Hall. The hall has recently gone through some major improvements. Thanks for your help in promoting the hall as a hub for the community. Please speak with any member of the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society or call 902-564-8494.

“THE POLISH CAPE BRETONERS”: A COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COLOURING BOOK PROJECT: (A project of CBU’S Tompkins Institute, in consultation with our parish and the Polish community). In the January 21st bulletin, the insert had a list of possible living sites and traditions to be featured and described in Polish and English. This colouring book will be a guide to both visitors and residents. Feedback and suggestions are kindly encouraged. There is a copy of this insert on the bulletin board near the main entrance.

POLISH "POP-UP" TUTORIAL FOR VALENTINE'S DAY:
SWIĘTY WALENTY: THE PLACE OF ST. VALENTINE IN THE CHURCH AND IN THE POLISH TRADITION: Very little is known about St. Valentine, and there may be more than one saint of the same name. The “Martyr Valentinus who died on the 14th of February on the Via Flaminia close to the Milvian bridge in Rome" still remains on the official list of saints for local veneration. When the General Calendar for universal liturgical veneration was revised in 1969, St. Valentine’s name no longer appeared. In Poland, St. Valentine, who is remembered as a third-century bishop, is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Prezemysl. In the Polish tradition, although St. Valentine is remembered for having blessed marriages that were prohibited by the Emperor, his patronage has been associated less with couples, marriages, and love, and more with people suffering from serious illness or restrictive conditions, particularly psychological illnesses and epilepsy.
Walentynki (Valen-tin-kee) – Valentine’s (Day)
Serce (se-r-ts-e) – Heart
Miłość (mee-wosh-ch) – Love
Kocham cię (ko-HA-m / chee-e-w) – I love you
Para (pa-ra) – couple
Małżonkowie (ma-w-dgon-KO-vee-e) – married couple
Czekolady (chek-oh-LA-d-i) – chocolates
Kwiaty (kfee-A-ti) – Flowers
