OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

REBUILDING UPDATE: Insulating is almost done. Drywalling continues. Windows are still being installed. The low bidder on the doors tenders came in over budget, so Rada and the construction manager are looking at possible cost savings to bring the doors within budget. The church will have full lightning protection. A meeting was held this past week with NSCC to look at other collaboration opportunities (in addition to the cross, which students are kindly making for us). Fund-raising remains very crucial to the project. There have been no changes to the budget expenditure numbers/projections that were distributed to the full parish at the lunch on December 13.

RADA MEMBERS: There will be a meeting after Mass at the O’Connell House to continue with unfinished agenda items from Wednesday’s meeting. Thanks very much!

LOAVES AND FISHES: The food drive at our Oplatek supper was very successful – many and varied items, Loaves and Fishes was happy to receive the items, plus some cash contributions ($105) that had been made. We collected items that Loaves and Fishes does not receive that often but needs, like toilet paper, tissue paper, healthy cereals, healthy juices, etc. Thanks, everyone, for your concern and support.

LIFELINE SYRIA has asked us to pass along word of a need for volunteers to process items that have been donated. It’s happening tomorrow at the St. George’s Church Hall (52 Nepean St) – loading the donations. And then sorting donations in the afternoon at the Schwartz building, 325 Vulcan St.

FUND-RAISING FOR OUR REBUILDING: With insurance plus funds raised to date through events and direct appeals, plus lots of in-kind donations, we will be able to move into our church in the spring (hope to announce a date soon!), but we are still working hard to raise an additional $150,000 – including for the back section, which will be unfinished when we move in (this is “Phase 2”). This area will eventually be a modest but attractive, bright and versatile parish/community space for meetings, rehearsals, retreats, gatherings (eg. after Masses), language lessons. There will be a well-configured kitchen, some space for displays of our faith, history, and culture, and a small, comfortable library/reading area.  (An updated rebuilding financial report will be distributed at our parish lunch on February 7.) Donors will be permanently recognized. Donors of $250 or more will have a Polish friendship dove (gołąbek) inscribed in their honour on a wall. THE 1050th ANNIVERSARY OF CHRISTIANITY IN POLAND 966-2016): In 966, the King of Poland, Mieszko I, converted to Christianity and also encouraged his subjects to learn more about and follow the example of Jesus. For 1,050 years, Christianity and Catholicism have animated the Polish identity and culture in major ways. Faith and culture have become deeply intertwined. Faith in Jesus and the intercession of the Blessed Mother have given hope to the Polish people during very difficult times. At the same time, many governments of free Poland over the centuries have recognized that the Gospel requires respecting the rights of non-Christian religious minorities.This year – the 1,050th anniversary of Christianity in Poland -- is a major anniversary for people around the world who identify in whatever way with the Polish heritage. It’s why Pope Francis decided to hold World Youth Day in Krakow. In the weeks ahead, let’s discuss as a parish how we will recognize this major, holy milestone.

Excerpts from Pope Francis' New Book, The Name of God is Mercy: "The Church does not exist to condemn people, but to bring about an encounter with the visceral love of God’s mercy. “I often say that in order for this to happen, it is necessary to go out: to go out from the churches and the parishes, to go outside and look for people where they live, where they suffer, and where they hope. I like to use the image of a field hospital to describe this `Church that goes forth.’” “If Peter did all of that, if the Gospels describe his sin and denials to us, and if despite all this Jesus said [to him], ‘tend my sheep’ (John 21), I don’t think we should be surprised if his successors describe themselves as sinners. It is nothing new.”
