OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

DZIEŃ ŚWIĘTEGO MIKOŁAJA / ST. NICHOLAS DAY (Dec. 6): In Poland, Swiety Mikolaj (St. Nicholas) normally visits homes to leave gifts during the night of December 5-6. Among Polish Cape Bretoners, this sometimes happens but it has been more common over the years to have St. Nicholas visit our church or hall on or close to the feast day. St. Nicholas will be in his bishop’s clothing when he visits us because, in the 4th century, he was the kind-hearted and generous Bishop of Myra, in present-day Turkey. St. Nicholas is often accompanied by an angel when he visits. He sometimes asks Catechism questions. He will be at our St. Nicholas Day event this afternoon at 2 at the Polish Village Hall. Let us all extend to him a warm welcome!

ST. NICHOLAS DAY TEA (Herbata z  z okazji Dnia Świętego Mikołaja) – TODAY, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2-4 P.M. – POLISH VILLAGE HALL: We still have some tickets left ($10 per person but free for children 12 and under). Please see Shauna McKay after Mass. St. Nicholas will bring small gifts for the children. This event supports the rebuilding of our church.

CLIFFORD ST. YOUTH CENTRE (NORTH SYDNEY): Please welcome to the tea today a group of youth and leaders from the Clifford St. Youth Centre (North Sydney). The centre has done fantastic work over the past six years.

8-ego grudnia / DECEMBER 8: Niepokalanym Poczęciu Najświętszej Maryi Panny/Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary: This feast is celebrated exactly nine months before the Feast of the Nativity of Mary (September 8), the feast day of our parish. It has been a global feast day since 1708. In Poland and other countries with deep Catholic traditions, it is often marked as a “family day”. The collect (general Mass prayer) for this day reads: “O God, mercifully hear the supplication of thy servants who are assembled together on the Conception of the Virgin Mother of God, may at her intercession be delivered by Thee from dangers which beset us.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNIONS - NEXT SUNDAY: We will gather as a parish after our 9:30 Mass in the Polish Village Hall for a short celebration (cake and lunch) to acknowledge and support our fellow parishioners. STEEPLE AND CROSS FOR OUR NEW CHURCH: The fibreglass steeple is being made at a boat-building facility in Port Morien. Also, students and instructors at Nova Scotia Community College – Marconi Campus have very kindly agreed to make the cross for the top of the steeple as a community service. Inserted in the bulletin are some possible designs. Please share any feedback with any member of the Rada. A decision will have to be made in the next day or two. Please imagine the cross being 70 feet up.

THANK YOU: The workers and tradespeople who are building our church asked to pass along to the whole parish their thanks for last Sunday’s lunch, warm welcome, and very pleasant community atmosphere. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way.

Umran Bhatti, Imam for Sydney’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, who joined us for our parish lunch last week, conveyed his admiration and congratulations for our rebuilding efforts. His community is very much looking forward to continuing to work with our community.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Honourable Mayann Francis, longtime friend of our parish, who is releasing her new children’s book, Mayann’s Train Ride, today at St. Philip’s African Orthodox Church.
