“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:

May 11: Filip, Franciszek, Iga, Ignacy, Lew, Lutogniew, Mira, Żegota
May 12: Dominik, Jan, Joanna
May 13: Andrzej, Ciechosław, Gloria, Magdalena, Piotr, Robert
May 14: Dobiesław, Wiktor, Maciej

OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR FIRST COMMUNION CANDIDATES: Keagan Edward Campbell, Frankie Christina Chislett, James Christopher Clarke, Rudy Anthony Magliaro

There will be lunch after Mass today downstairs – and a chance to congratulate our First Communion candidates. Everyone is welcome.

Our Polish micro-market has some new items (downstairs after Mass).

CAPE BRETON POLISH TARTAN: We have sufficient orders to support more than the minimum order of 30 metres of Cape Breton Polish tartan fabric – and we are happily taking more orders. Thank you! For those who filled out forms, please kindly give your payment to Shauna McKay today or next Sunday (payment can also be mailed to the church), or please speak with Shauna if you would like a reminder of what you ordered (samckay@ns.sympatico.ca). Cheques should be made out to “St. Mary’s Polish Parish.” Profits from the sale of merchandise with the Cape Breton Polish Tartan will support parish community service projects, will help send some of our youth to Krakow, Poland, for World Youth Day in 2016, and will help with the upkeep of our beautiful, historic church. Please see the back of the insert in today’s bulletin.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: The inter-faith Habitat for Humanity group has been meeting at our church. We will now be rotating to each other’s places of faith. The next meeting is on Sunday, May 13, at 7 p.m. at St. Alban’s Anglican Church in the Pier. This group is working together very well. We are planning an event to take place during the Pier Multicultural Festival in August that will allow people to visit and learn more about our sacred places (while raising money for Habitat and the sacred places) and a fund-raising board game called “The Pier.” Again, profits would support both Habitat and the sacred places. If you would like to be part of these efforts in any way, please speak with Tom Urbaniak.

POLISH CLASSES: This series of Polish classes is coming to an end, but there is demand for more sessions. Please stay tuned. Also, we are looking at one-day workshops (to which everyone would be invited). For example, planting our parish community garden in Polish!

NOTICE OF SECULARIZED CHURCHES (Notice from Bishop Dunn for parish bulletins): Please be advised that decrees of Closure and Secularization have been issued for Saint Alphonsus Church, Victoria Mines, Saint Joseph Church, New Victoria and Saint Agnes Church, New Waterford.  These decrees were issued in light of the fact that all three churches have been closed since 2009 and Saint Leonard Parish has no need of these churches, that the condition of each of the churches continues to deteriorate seriously, that the parish and the diocese need to be protected from liability issues and that the former parishioners of these churches have their spiritual needs met at Saint Leonard Parish (and other parishes).  Parishioners may obtain a copy of these decrees from the parish Office of Saint Leonard Parish.  Anyone who wants to make recourse against these decrees must do so by writing Bishop Dunn by May 23, 2014.

THANK YOU to everyone who participated in last Sunday’s Annual General Meeting – and for the ongoing hard work and support of the entire parish. For those who did not get a copy of the Annual Report, there is a copy on the bulletin board and it will also be posted on the parish website this week.

HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY! A PRAYER FOR MOTHERS: All-loving God, we give you thanks and praise for mothers young and old. We pray for mothers who give life and tend to our needs; May they be blessed with patience and wisdom to care for their families and themselves with great joy. We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us; May they continue to guide in strong and gentle ways. We remember mothers who are separated from their children because of war, poverty, or conflict; May they feel the loving embrace of our God, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother, who wipes every tear away. We pray for women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and compassion. We remember mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.   - Adapted from a prayer by Heidi Busse

ŚW. STANISŁAW, BISKUP/St. Stanislaus (Bishop), a principal patron saint of Poland – FEAST DAY: May 8: On our high altar you will see a figure of St. Stanislaus, a much-loved saint of the Polish people. Ordained as a priest in Krakow, Stanislaw (1030-1079) was very active in promoting the Christian faith in Poland. He established Benedictine monasteries and welcomed papal legates to the country. Stanislaw became critical of King Boleslaw for his cruelty in war and his personal immorality. When the king did not change his ways, despite many appeals, Stanislaw regretfully had him excommunicated. The king then declared the bishop a traitor and ordered him killed. It is said that the king’s soldiers refused the order to kill the bishop, whereupon the murder was committed by the king himself.  The murder stirred outrage across Poland, and the veneration of Stanislaw began shortly after his death. He was canonized in 1253 by Pope Innocent IV.

(DZIEŃ MATKI / MOTHERS’ DAY)
Dzisiaj pozdrawiamy, Maryjo, Ciebie

Dzisiaj pozdrawiamy Maryjo Ciebie
Jak Cię pozdrawiają anieli w niebie
Zdrowaś, zdrowaś Panno Maryjo

Bo Tyś jest Matuchną Syna Bożego
Tyś jest cesarzową świata całego
Tyś jest godna Maryjo tego

Syn ojca wiecznego kochamy
Matko cie nazywa
Panno nad panny wyzyszył się nad wszystkie stany

I my też Maryjo k Tobie wołamy
Przed Twoim obrazem wszyscy klękamy
Wysłuchaj nas Ciebie wzywamy

We honour your today, O Mary
Just as the angels in heaven honour you
Hail, O Virgin Mary

For you are the Mother of the Son of God
The empress of the whole world
You are worthy of this, O Mary

We love the Son of the Eternal Father
And we call you Mother
Virgin of virgins, elevated above all.

And to you, Mary, we call
In front of your image we all kneel
Hear us, we appeal to you.
