“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
August 11: Aleksander, Włodzimierz, Włodziwoj, Zula, Zuzanna
August 12: Klara, Lech, Piotr
August 13: Diana, Helena, Jan, Kasjan, Radomiła, Wojbor
August 14: Dobrowoj, Euzebiusz
August 15: Maria, Stefan
August 16: Domarad, Domarat, Joachim
August 17: Anastazja, Angelika, Anita, Eliza, Jacek, Jaczewoj, Joanna, Julianna, Miron, Żanna

OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

LAST WEEKEND’S EVENTS – A BIG THANK YOU! By all accounts last weekend went very well – the Red and White reception, the heritage plaquing ceremony, the Polish Food Fest, the Saturday evening dance, our Mass with visiting family members, and our free community barbeque and picnic. Different people took the lead for different aspects and showed great management skills. The general feedback is that our 100th anniversary year is very positive so far. Serdecznie dziekujemy!

SHRINE REBUILDING: Over the next year, the kapliczka will be rebuilt within a well-designed heritage parkette, but with some different materials and security features. There has been great support from the broader community. Any donations or pledges of volunteer help are welcome. If you can assist in any way, please write your name and telephone number in the book at the back of the church.

ONGOING REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS: The new railings to the choir are now complete (they will still get another coat of stain). A few additional safety enhancements and repairs are still planned before September 8.

DONATIONS FOR PRIZES FOR CHILDREN’S GAMES FOR OUR POLISH FESTIVAL (Sept. 8): Thank you to everyone who contributed prizes for the children’s games for our Aug. 4 community picnic. Virtually all of the prizes were used, and we would be grateful for any additional contributions for Sept. 8. There will be a box at the back of the church, or please speak with Krista Ann Starzomski.

CENTENARY EXHIBIT: Our Centenary Historical and Art Exhibit Sto Lat! The First Century of St. Mary’s Polish Parish will remain up until at least September 8. If you have visitors in town please ensure that they make a point to see it!

TOUR OF OUR HISTORIC CHURCH – If you’re interested in helping out as a tour guide in the weeks ahead, please call 563-1226.

PREPARING FOR OUR CENTENARY WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 6-8: We will mark 100 years to the day since the founding of the parish with a special Mass and Polish Festival (September 8) and what promises to be a memorable banquet on Friday, September 6, at the Polish Village Hall. If you can assist in any way to ensure we have a well organized and wide range of activites, please speak with any member of the Rada. Shauna McKay has banquet tickets for those who made reservations!

THE RENOVATED AND REFURBISHED POLISH VILLAGE HALL
is a comfortable, well appointed, modernized venue for events large and small. Please consider renting the hall for your events. Please call 564-8494.

Our Pogoria Polish Folk Ensemble will be performing in Halifax Oct 12 at Pomorze Polish Dance Group’s 30th Anniversary Gala (at the Dalhousie University Club). Tickets are $50. Please speak with Shari McKay.

SPONSORS AND DONORS FOR THE POLISH FESTIVAL (Sept. 8): Please feel free to show the letter (bulletin insert) to any companies or individuals considering financial or in-kind sponsorship for the Polish Festival. Please contact Krista Ann Starzomski to indicate whom you are considering asking in order to avoid overlapping asks! Thanks!

August 15: Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven (Wniebowzięcie Najświętszej Maryi Panny): This is an important Catholic holiday in many countries, and is widely celebrated by people of Polish and Croatian descent, among others. It is also the main national holiday of the Acadian people (Notre Dame de l’Assomption). The Church teaches that "having completed the course of her earthly life, [Mary] was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory." On August 15, 2004, Blessed Pope John Paul II gave a sermon in Lourdes in which he reaffirmed the importance of this belief. In many places, fruits and herbs are blessed on this feast day.

St. Maksymilian Kolbe – Feast Day – Wed., Aug. 14. Please join us for Mass at 4 p.m., followed by the Novena to Our Lady of Czestochowa. St. Maksymilian Kolbe (1894-1941) was a Polish priest active in the Catholic media and in missionary and charitable work. Interned in the Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp, he insisted on replacing a condemned prisoner who was being sent to his death in the starvation bunker. Father Kolbe, who had a strong devotion to Mary, was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 10, 1982. Franciszek Gajowniczek, the condemned prisoner whose life Father Kolbe had saved, was present for the canonization.

SPONSORSHIP – POLISH FESTIVAL – SEPTEMBER 8, 2013

Dear Friends:

St. Mary’s Polish Parish is honoured to host the Annual Polish Festival – a time to profile and celebrate the living heritage of Polish Cape Bretoners!

This year’s festival will take place from 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, on the parish grounds (Wesley St. at Victoria Road, Whitney Pier). We will have Polish food, folk-dance performances, crafts, children’s games, tours of our historic church, and more.

This year’s Polish Festival coincides with the 100th anniversary of our parish, which will be officially commemorated at the 9:30 a.m. Mass on September 8 and with a Centenary Banquet on Friday, September 6. We have been marking our Centenary throughout the year with a series of concerts, special events and ceremonies, as well as service projects. We are proud of our community and proud of our heritage. We are delighted to share what we have with others and to be part of the rich Cape Breton mosaic.

We would like to invite you to consider a financial or in-kind contribution (eg. prizes for children’s games, equipment, printing, or food/ingredients relevant to the festival menu).

All sponsors and donors will be acknowledged in the festival program and on the parish website (www.stmaryspolishparish.ca).

Please do not hesitate to contact the under-signed for any additional information. Thank you in advance for your interest and support, and we hope to see you on September 8. Serdecznie dziękujemy i zapraszamy!

Yours sincerely,
Krista Ann Starzomski
