“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
August 21: Emilian, Filipina, Franciszek, Joanna
August 22: Cezary, Dalegor, Maria
August 23: Filip, Laurenty
August 24: Jerzy, Joanna, Malina, Michalina, Albert
August 25: Grzegorz, Luiza, Michał

OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

IMPORTANT NOTICE: NEW MASS TIME: BEGINNING SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH, OUR SUNDAY MASS TIME WILL BE 10 A.M.

HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES to the family and friends of our fellow parishioner Veronica Malinowski, whose funeral Mass took place yesterday in our church. Wieczy odpoczynek racz Jej dać Panie … Eternal rest grant onto her, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her.

LUNCH AFTER MASS NEXT SUNDAY: Father Paul will join us and it will be a chance to thank him. Everyone is welcome. We will hold the lunch outside near the parish garden, weather permitting, otherwise in the Polish Village Hall. The following is a list of parishioners who are next in the rotation to please bring a dish. Thank you so much for your help: Janet Hawthorne, Wayne Joseph, Jancia and Bernie LaRusic Robert Lewandowski, Rita MacDonald, Liz Melski, Tony Melski, Frania McKay, Mary McMullin, Linda Morykot, Mike Morykot, Joan Mosher, Sophie and Roddie O’Toole

PHASE 2 OF OUR CONSTRUCTION: This will be getting underway soon. The first increment will include mechanical and electrical, ceiling, lighting, and drywall. The goal is to do enough work to get a basic occupancy permit for “Sala 1050” (back section) as soon as possible, and then work on the next steps (like the kitchen).

FUND-RAISING: To complete Phase 2, we will still need to raise about $90,000. This will include several fall events, appeal for corporate and organizational sponsorships, and individual donations. Phase 2 rebuilding envelopes are at the back of the church.

DONORS’ PLAQUES: We are going to give a little more time to solicit Phase 2 donors before finalizing the donors’ plaques for the church, which will be displayed permanently. We are so grateful for all the generous donations that have come in to date! Thanks for sharing postcards and encouragement with others.

ALTAR SOCIETY: The following is a schedule for September to December: September: Delores Starzomski, Peggy Ryba; October: Marilyn Gillis, Joe Gillis; November: Catherine Tucker, Herb Tucker; December: Anne Marie Campbell, Jimmie Campbell.
There is a checklist of items (re preparing for Mass and duties after Mass) in the sacristy room to the right of the altar. Thank you so much for your assistance and generous service.

AUGUST 26: FEAST OF OUR LADY OF CZĘSTOCHOWA: A NOTE ON THE JASNA GÓRA MONESTARY AND OUR LADY OF CZĘSTOCHOWA: The monastery was established in 1392 by Pauline monks from Hungary and has been Poland’s most famous place of pilgrimage for centuries. “Jasna Góra” literally means “Luminous Mount.” The original icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa is present here. On June 4, 1979, on his first visit back to his home country, St. John Paul II remarked: “The Poles are accustomed to link with this place, this shrine, the many happenings of their lives: the various joyful or sad moments, especially the solemn, decisive moments, the occasions of responsibility, such as the choice of the direction for one's life, the choice of one's vocation, the birth of one's children, the final school examinations, and so many other occasions. They are accustomed to come with their problems to Jasna Góra to speak of them with their heavenly Mother, who not only has her image here, one of the best known and most venerated pictures of her in

WHY DOES OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA HAVE SLASH MARKS ON HER CHEEK? There are several histories in circulation, but the most common is about events in 1430. It is said that Hussite raiders tried to plunder the monastery at Czestochowa. When their horses would not move, one of the warriors grabbed the sacred icon and slashed it three times. When he tried to do so a fourth time, the sword fell out of his hand (some accounts even say he died). The image was recovered, but attempts to erase the slash marks were in vain; this may be a way in which Our Lady reminds us of the hurt and suffering in the world. In almost every Polish church in the world, you will see reproductions of this image, with the slash marks still in place.

TRANSLATION OF TODAY'S SECOND READING: A reading from the letter to the Hebrews: Brothers and sisters, You have forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as children: “My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him; for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges.” Endure your trials as “discipline”; God treats you as sons. For what “son” is there whom his father does not discipline? At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it. So strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees.  Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be disjointed but healed.
