“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
September 9: Augustyna, Aureliusz, Piotr, Ścibor
September 10: Aldona, Łukasz, Mikołaj (Nicholas)
September 11: Feliks, Jacek, Jan
September 12: Amadeusz, Maria, Piotr, Sylwin
September 13: Aleksander, Eugenia, Filip, Lubor
September 14: Bernard, Cyprian, Roksana, Szymon (Simon)
September 15: Maria, Nikodem

Bóg zapłać! God bless you!

OGŁOSZENIA/ANNOUNCEMENTS

DZISIAJ OBCHODZIMY NASZE 99 ROCZNICE MARKING OUR 99th ANNIVERSARY: We will receive a special blessing at Mass today, and we will pray for the guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit as we prepare for the various events and celebrations of our 100th anniversary in 2013. May it be a year that follows in the footsteps of our founders and of generations of devoted parishioners – a year of prayerful reflection, of joy, of generosity to all. We pray that, as a parish, we will continue to be strong in our faith and demonstrate the true meaning of community.

POLISH FESTIVAL AT OUR PARISH TODAY: Following Mass, there will be a presentation and discussion of archival photos led by CBU researchers Patricia and Justin Nalepa. A historical tour will follow. Polish dinners will be served around noon, followed by outdoor cultural performances, children’s games, a raffle with traditional crafts, a beer garden serving Polish beer, and more.  Sincere thanks to everyone who has worked so hard on the preparations. Thank you as well to ECBC for support under its Festivals and Events program and to the CBRM for lending the temporary stage.

FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY – SEPTEMBER 8 – FEAST DAY OF OUR PARISH: On September 8, 1913, the Szelak family transferred Lots 118 and 121 to the “Catholic Episcopal Corporation of Antigonish, Trustee for St. Mary’s Polish Church.” Construction began immediately. Appropriately, this happened on the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is the formal Polish name of our parish (Parafia p.w. Narodzenia Najświętszej Maryi Panny).  The Church has celebrated Mary’s birth since the sixth century, if not earlier.

“Impart to your servants, we pray, O Lord, the gift of heavenly grace, that the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin may bring deeper peace to those for whom the birth of her Son was the dawning of salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.”

WE WELCOME VISITORS TO OUR PARISH: Witamy! Welcome! In addition to today’s tours during the festival, we would be happy to show you this sacred, historic place and to introduce you to members of our community. We can always arrange tours for visitors, tourists, and newcomers to the community upon request. Please sign our guest book at the back of the church, and we invite you to take a pamphlet summarizing our history. In the pamphlet is a tear-off form to provide your e-mail address or contact information to receive notices about our future events (please feel free to drop this in the collection basket or to write your e-mail/mailing address in the guest book). Our home is your home, and you are always welcome at St. Mary’s Polish Church.

PAINTING OF THE FOUNDATION: Due to the inclement weather mid-week, the cement work (required before painting) was not completed. We will try again in the coming week. If you can spare a few hours, please let  Paul Tynski know. And thank you to Paul for the painting of the railings this week, among his other efforts for our parish. Dziekujemy!

PARISH STATUTES/POLICIES COMMITTEE: The committee has now completed a first draft of updated By-laws for the Rada (Pastoral Council) and committees. These were submitted to Father Paul for review, who in turn also requested feedback from Father John Barry, Judicial Vicar for the diocese.  The draft document was very well received, and one additional section was recommended. This change will be made and the draft will be circulated next week to parishioners for your initial review and feedback. The committee will then prepare a final draft for submission to a Special General Meeting of the parish.  As the parish consultation process will require a little more time, the Special General Meeting originally proposed for September 16th will be delayed by a few weeks.   It will thus be requested that the Interim Finance Committee remain in place for the time being – with thanks to the members of the Interim Finance Committee for their dedication!  Thank you kindly also to the parish volunteers who have been working hard on the By-laws as members of the Statutes/Policies Committee. They are, in alphabetical order:  Stephanie Melnick Black, Evelyn Cook, Janet Hawthorne, Michael Melski, Tony Melski, Frank Starzomski, Tom Urbaniak.

100th ANNIVERSARY FAMILY REUNIONS:  Civic Holiday weekend, 2013 (August 3-5). Please mark your calendars now!

DIOCESE RENEWAL SURVEY: The Diocese continues to invite responses to its renewal survey: antigonishdiocese.com

SWIĘTY KAZIMIERZ JAGIELLOŃCZYK/ST. CASIMIR – ONE OF THE PATRON SAINTS OF POLAND AND LITHUANIA:  Although St. Casimir died at the young age of 25 (in 1484), his short period as prince-regent of Poland was marked by prudence, tolerance, and a search for peace.  St. Casimir followed an ascetic, prayerful lifestyle, shunning wealthy trappings. His policies sought to have noble families share their bounty with the poor.  As we participate in our communities as citizens, and as we assume leadership roles in our parish and in community organizations, we ask for the same grace and wisdom.
Święty Kazimierz, módł się za nami! St. Casimir, pray for us!

THE OPENING HYMN FOR TODAY’S MASS
Weź w Swą Opiekę Nasz Kościół Święty

This was one of Blessed Pope John Paul II’s favourite hymns.  Our choir has selected it as today’s opening hymn, as we mark our 99th anniversary. The lyrics speak to our special connection with the Blessed Mother and our hope and our prayer for our parish and the whole Church.  We will be singing verses 1 and 3 (please see the bottom of this page).

The other hymns today are:
Offeratory – Number 143 in the coil hymnal: “Nie Opuszczaj Nas” (Forsake Us Not)
Communion – Number 119 – “O Mój Jezu” (O, My Jesus)
Post-Communion – Number 176 – “Jest Zakątek Na Tej Ziemi (Czarna Madonna)” (There’s a Part of this Earth – Black Madonna)
Recessional – Number 244 – “Ciebie Boże chwalimy!” (Holy God We Praise Thy Name!)

Weź w swą opiekę nasz Kościół święty,
Panno Najświętsza, niepokalana;
Niechaj miłością każdy przejęty
Czci w nim Jezusa, naszego Pana.

I kraj ten cały i lud Twój wierny,
Tobie, o Mario, dziś polecamy,
Niechaj nas zbawi Bóg miłosierny,
Którego przez Twe serce błagamy.

Take in your care our Holy Church,
O Blessed Virgin, immaculate;
Let your love be accepted by us all
In honour of Christ, our Lord.

This whole country and your faithful people,
Ask you today, O Mary
May the merciful God save us,
Through your heart’s intercession, we humbly appeal.
