“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
October 26: Dymitriusz, Łucjan, Lucyna
October 27: Iwona, Sabina, Wincenty
October 28: Szymon, Tadeusz
October 29: Euzebia, Franciszek, Lubogost, Teodor, Wioletta
October 30: Edmund, Klaudiusz
October 31: Antoni, Antonina

Please note that there are still a few additional traditional Polish znicze (cemetery candles) for sale downstairs in our Polish Micro-Market. A SPECIAL PROJECT IN OUR PARISH: OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD (shoebox appeal): Operation Christmas Child provides an opportunity for people of all ages to be involved in a simple, hands-on project of Samaritan's Purse that focuses on the true meaning of Christmas - Jesus Christ - God's greatest gift. At the back of the church, there are special shoeboxes and a pamphlet with information about what the boxes should contain.  Also, a small donation of $7 for shipping purposes is requested to be put in the envelope attached to the booklet, and placed inside, at the top of the box. If you wish to participate, please take one of the shoeboxes, fill it, and return it to the church on or before Sunday, November 9th. Suzanne Campbell will pick up the boxes and deliver them to the depot in Glace Bay. Please help an economically disadvantaged child enjoy Christmas. Suzanne can be reached at 270-2859. LAST SUNDAY’S DOZYNKI – OUR PARISH’S POLISH HARVEST FESTIVAL was a great success. There was very positive feedback about the food, the Pogoria performances, the displays, the children’s games, the decorating, and everything else – including the positive spirit of our parish. And we met many new people. This was another major volunteer effort. Please know that it is much appreciated. Thank you, everyone!

ROOF: We will provide an interim list next week of roof-shingle donors and IMOs . Thank you for your generosity! The Property Committee has carefully reviewed multiple proposals from contractors and checked references and with other churches that have had recent roof work.  Subject to weather and other variables, it is hoped that the work on the roof will commence in the coming week!

Our fall series of POLISH LANGUAGE CLASSES got underway yesterday, led by Edyta Baczyk. There has been a lot of interest, and we are at full enrollment.

OUR NEXT POLSKI PIATEK – coinciding with Andrzejki (traditional feast day of St. Andrew) will be on Friday, November 28, at 6 p.m. at the Polish Village Hall. There is no charge. There will be a special presentation of a momento signed by the late Janusz Zurakowski, the famous Polish Canadian aviator who was the chief test pilot for the Avro Arrow.  He would have turned 100 this year.

MEETING FOR ANYONE CONSIDERING APPLYING FOR A HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOME: In the spring of 2015, Habitat for Humanity will start its Whitney Pier Project.  On Thursday, November 13, at 6:30 p.m. there will be an information session at the Polish Village Hall for anyone considering applying to be a Habitat for Humanity family. Criteria and the application process will be explained. Habitat for Humanity builds affordable homes for (and with) modest-income people in need of a safe and appropriate place to live. The Habitat model  is affordable ownership. Families contribute “sweat equity,” in exchange for which there is no down payment or interest on the mortgage. A number of faith communities, including ours, have been working with Habitat in the lead-up to the Whitney Pier project.

NOTE FROM POLISH HONORARY CONSUL JAN SKORA: “I would like to thank you for the Polish community’s invitation and exceptional reception during my and my wife’s visit last week in Sydney. Like always, I am deeply moved by the community’s engagement and dedication to maintain our Polish heritage …”

PROPERTY COMMITTEE CHAIR – Jim Campbell. If you notice any repair/upkeep issues, please feel free to contact Jim at 565-8924 (cell) or 562-5837 (home).

THE RENOVATED AND REFURBISHED POLISH VILLAGE HALL is a comfortable, well appointed, modernized venue for events large and small. Please consider renting the hall for your events. Please call 564-8494.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR ON-LINE “VIRTUAL TOUR” AND AN 8.5 MINUTE PARISH WELCOME VIDEO ON OUR WEBSITE:  www.stmaryspolishparish.ca
