“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
October 12: Maksymilian, Witold
October 13: Daniel, Edward, Mikołaj
October 14: Alan, Bernard, Dominik
October 15: Jadwiga, Teresa
October 16: Aurelia, Gerard, Grzegorz

THANKSGIVING IN CANADA AND POLAND: The 1957 parliamentary proclamation – which fixed the time of year for this national holiday in Canada -- referenced “Almighty God” and the “bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.” In Poland, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the first Sunday of June. It is an expressly religious holiday. Every year there is a theme. This year it was to give thanks for the canonization of St. John Paul II and for the 25th anniversary of freedom in Poland (the peaceful fall of Communism in 1989).

Dziękujemy Ci, Ojcze nasz – A THANKSGIVING HYMN (our post-Communion hymn today)

This hymn thanks God for our blessings and for our faith. It asks for forgiveness and compassion in order to transform the world.

Dziękujemy Ci, Ojcze nasz,
Za święty winny szczep Dawida,
Który nam poznać dałeś
Przez Jezusa Syna Twego.

Dziękujemy Ci, Ojcze nasz,
Za życie i za wiarę.
Którą nam poznać dałeś,
Przez Jezusa Syna Twego.
Tobie chwała na wieki!

Ty, o Panie wszechmocny,
Stworzyłeś wszystko dla Imienia swego,
Pokarm i napój dałeś
Ludziom na pożywienie.

Pomnij, Panie, na Twój Kościół
I wybaw go od wszelkiego złego,
I doprowadź go w miłości swojej
Do Królestwa Twego.

Niechaj przyjdzie Twa łaska
I niech przeminie ten świat,
Kto święty, niech przystąpi,
Kto nim nie jest, niech czyni pokutę.

Wrzesień/September 2014

Szanowni Państwo / Dear Friends:

RE: SPONSORING BUNDLES OF SHINGLES FOR THE NEW ROOF
St. Mary’s Polish Parish is in the middle of a major fund-raising campaign so that we can complete a much-needed new roof in the very near future. Total costs will be approximately $40,000.

We are proud to be stewards not only of a beautiful historic landmark (a protected heritage property, with a rare designation from the Province of Nova Scotia) but a vibrant and welcoming place of faith with a special sense of community and distinctive customs that we are blessed to share with everyone.

As one of our fund-raising efforts, we are inviting parishioners and friends of the parish to sponsor bundles of shingles at $25 per bundle. If you wish, you can sponsor the bundles in memory of a loved one.  Names of sponsors (and IMO names, if applicable) will be listed on a permanent plaque in the church.

Please feel free to use the Roof Fund envelopes, which can be deposited into the Sunday collection or mailed to the parish. Charitable tax receipts will be provided (at the same time as general collection tax receipts, in February or early March).

Thank you kindly for any support you can give to this important collective effort. May God bless you and your families.

Bóg zapłać!           ------ Rada Duszpasterska (Parish Council) of St. Mary’s Polish Church
