“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
July 6: Dominik, Dominika, Łucja, Lucja
July 7: Antoni, Kira, Piotr
July 8: Adrian, Adrianna, Chwalimir, Edgar, Elżbieta, Eugeniusz
July 9: Mikołaj, Weronika, Zenon
July 10: Aleksander, Amelia, Aniela, Filip

ST. MICHAEL’S POLISH BENEFIT SOCIETY meets this evening at 7 p.m.

WE’RE PUTTING TOGETHER A PARISH TEAM FOR AUGUST 2: Would you like to be part of our parish’s team for the “Pier Pursuit” event on the afternoon of Saturday, August 2? Many of the local churches and mosque are participating. Teams will visit each of the participating places of faith and answer trivia questions by touring each site or speaking with people on site. It costs $15 per person to enter. All proceeds will support the Habitat for Humanity home-building project in the Pier in the spring of 2015. A barbecue will follow. This promises to be a fun event. Please speak with Tom Urbaniak (563-1226).

FURTHER ENHANCING OUR OUTDOOR SPACE FOR QUIET PRAYER: We are blessed with a beautiful grotto, garden, lawn, and trees. There has been a lot of volunteer effort this year and over the years. It has been suggested to add benches or chairs, and possibly a feature with water. We’re looking for suggestions that are fairly low-cost but add to the restful, meditative quality of the space. Please share any suggestions this week with any member of the Rada. Dziekujemy bardzo.

PROPERTY COMMITTEE CHAIR – Jim Campbell. If you notice any repair/upkeep issues, please feel free to contact Jim at 565-8924 (cell) or 562-5837 (home).

INTERPRETIVE PANELS FOR THE KOLONIA IMMIGRANT HERITAGE PARKETTE (KAPLICZKA PARKETTE) have to be developed by the end of July. The Polish Consul General has kindly come on board as a sponsor. If you have photos, stories, or content about Kolonia and the immigration experience that you think should be on the panels, please call 563-1226. A successful design workshop was held on June 19.

NEW ROOF: We have several estimates now, and we are awaiting response to our grant application for a partial subsidy (Heritage Property Program, Province of Nova Scotia). However, we expect costs to be in the order of $40,000-$50,000. Your support to the Building Fund is greatly appreciated!

FUND-RAISING AUCTION: Please mark the date of Saturday, October 4, for a fund-raising auction for our new roof for the church – to take place at the Polish Village Hall. We will be reaching out to the broader community for donations of good and services to be auctioned. Please speak with your contacts in the community. Thank you for your help and support!

PIER FAITH COMMUNITIES WORKING TOGETHER TO SUPPORT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY (WHITNEY PIER PROJECT): The next meeting will be in our church, downstairs, on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

VISITORS WELCOME TO OUR HISTORIC CHURCH: If you have visitors this summer, please do not hesitate to bring them to Sunday and Wednesday Mass. Everyone is welcome. Also, if any visitors would like a tour of the church during the week or if you or your guests would like the church opened for quiet prayer at any time, please don’t hesitate to call 563-1226.  Please ask guests to sign our guest book at the back of the church.

VISIT BY POLISH MOTORCYCLISTS: They recently dropped by on a weekday and toured the church, and left a nice note and donation for our new roof: “Pozdrowienia od chłopaków motocyklistów z New York oraz New Jersey. Szczęść Boże. Do zobaczenia w następnym roku. Robert, Krzysiek, Chris, [fourth name not legible]. Translation: Best wishes from the motorcycle guys from New York and New Jersey. God bless, See you next year.

She has been interested in our work to maintain our faith, Polish culture and language, and how these are intertwined.

Kiedy Ranne Wstają Zorze

Our opening hymn – a great spiritual classic – was composed around 1780 by Franciszek Karpiński and was probably performed for the first time in the Stary Kościół Farny (“old church”) in Białystok, which is now part of a basilica complex. It is #219 in our coil-bound hymnal. The text is reprinted below with an English translation.

Kiedy ranne wstają zorze,
Tobie ziemia, Tobie morze,
Tobie śpiewa żywioł wszelki:
Bądź pochwalon, Boże wielki!
A człowiek, który bez miary,
Obsypany Twymi dary,
Coś go `stworzył i ocalił,
A czemuż by Cię nie chwalił.?
Ledwie oczy przetrzeć zdołam,
Wnet do mego Pana wołam,
Do mego Boga na niebie,
I szukam Go koło siebie.
Wielu snem śmierci upadli,
Co się wczoraj spać pokładli,
My się jeszcze obudzili,
Byśmy Cię, Boże chwalił
When the early aurora rises,
To you the land and the sea
To your glory sings everything living.
Be praised, O great God!
A person who without measure
Is showered with Your gifts
A great thing created and saved that person.
And so why would You not be praised?
I can barely wipe my eyes,
Soon to my Lord I do cry out,
And to my God in heaven,
I'm looking for him around me.
Many in their dreams fell into death,
Only yesterday they fell into sleep,
But we, for our part, still did awake
So that we could praise You, O God
