“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:

June 15: Angelina, Jolanta, Witold, Witołd, Witolda, Witosław
June 16: Alina, Aneta, Budzimir, Jan, Justyna
June 17: Agnieszka, Franciszek, Laura, Marcjan, Radomił

OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

Uroczystość Najświętszej Trójcy / Trinity Sunday: The story is told of St Augustine of Hippo, a great philosopher and theologian. He was preoccupied with the doctrine of the Blessed Trinity. He wanted so much to understand the doctrine of one God in three persons and to be able to explain it logically. One day he was walking along the sea shore and reflecting on this matter.  Suddenly, he saw a little child all alone on the shore. The child made a hole in the sand, ran to the sea with a little cup, filled her cup with sea water, ran up and emptied the cup into the hole she had made in the sand. Back and forth she went to the sea, filled her cup and came and poured it into the hole. Augustine drew up and said to her, “Little child, what are you doing?” She replied, “I am trying to empty the sea into this hole.” “How do you think,” Augustine asked her, “that you can empty this immense sea into this tiny hole and with this tiny cup?” She answered back, “And you, how do you suppose that with your small head you can comprehend the immensity of God?” With that the child disappeared.

FATHER’S DAY BLESSINGS: This is one of the popular Polish rhymes that you can share with your father, living or deceased. An approximate (and rhyming) English translation follows:
Kochany tato,
To Ty mnie nauczyłeś, ze warto się starać
mieć cel w życiu i się nie poddawać.
Teraz ja Twoje słowa dalej przekazuje,
a Tobie za Twą mądrość stokrotnie dziękuję

Dear Dad,
You taught me to always give my very best;
To discern my life’s purpose before retreating to rest;
Now, I want to share your teachings for all to hear;
And to say thanks for your wisdom, which I shall always hold dear.

NEXT SUNDAY: Boże Ciało /Corpus Christi: At the end of Mass, as per the Polish custom, we will have a procession to an outdoor altar that will be set up near our grotto and food garden (ogródek). Father Paul will offer special blessings. If you have traditional attire or a St. Michael’s uniform, please wear it next Sunday. We are asking if a few of the children/youth of our parish would like to be the flower and bell carriers in the procession. If you can help, we would be very grateful if you could come for a short practice on Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m. (at the same time as everyone is welcome to the planting of our community garden).

THANK YOU very much to Pathways to Employment for working on our floral arrangements in front of the church this past week. Pathways is a social enterprise that creates training and employment opportunities for people in our region who are living with a mental illness.  Our parish has already worked with Pathways on a few projects.

PLANTING OUR PARISH’S COMMUNITY GARDEN AND LEARNING POLISH AT THE SAME TIME:  Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome!

STARTING TODAY, WE WILL HAVE COFFEE AND PĄCZKI DOWNSTAIRS AFTER MASS MOST SUNDAYS. Sometimes other sweets will be available as well. We will have a basket with a suggested flat contribution of $3 per person. These more frequent gatherings will help raise funds for the new roof, but they also respond to many parishioners’ wish to have additional informal get-togethers after Mass, not just on the Sundays every month when we have lunch or when we have special festivities. Everyone is welcome.

THE NEXT “POLSKI PIATEK” [Polish Friday] – informal, after-work get-together – including some quick Polish lessons and opportunities to learn popular Polish songs – will be on Friday, June 27, at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome. The last one was a fun and successful gathering.

PROPERTY COMMITTEE CHAIR – Jim Campbell. If you notice any repair/upkeep issues, please feel free to contact Jim at 565-8924 (cell) or 562-5837 (home). Thank you, Jim, and thanks to our other dedicated property/grounds volunteers – what you do is much appreciated. If anyone would like to help with any property-related improvements/repairs  – even if it’s on a one-time ad hoc basis, please let Jim know.

INTERPRETIVE PANELS FOR THE KOLONIA IMMIGRANT HERITAGE PARKETTE (KAPLICZKA PARKETTE) have to be developed by the end of July. The Polish Consul General has kindly come on board as a sponsor. If you have photos, stories, or content about Kolonia and the immigration experience that you think should be on the panels, please call 563-1226.

NEW ROOF: We have several estimates now, and we are awaiting response to our grant application for a partial subsidy (Heritage Property Program, Province of Nova Scotia). However, we expect costs to be in the order of $40,000-$50,000. Your support to the Building Fund is greatly appreciated!

CAPE BRETON POLISH TARTAN – design developed by our parish. Order forms for merchandise are at the back of the church.

PARISH CENTENARY COOKBOOKS: $10.00
PRZEZ POKOLENIA: Prayers and Customs of St. Mary’s Polish Church: $10.00 (563-1226)

GIFT CERTIFICATES – POLISH VILLAGE HALL.  Please speak with Bernie LaRusic. Since the renovations, the hall is seeing increasing traffic as a comfortable, modern, versatile space for events large and small.

THE RENOVATED AND REFURBISHED POLISH VILLAGE HALL is a comfortable, well appointed, modernized venue for events large and small. Please consider renting the hall for your events. Please call 564-8494.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR ON-LINE “VIRTUAL TOUR” AND AN 8.5 MINUTE PARISH WELCOME VIDEO ON OUR WEBSITE:  www.stmaryspolishparish.ca

Wishing you a blessed week! Bóg zapłać!
