Wniebowstąpienie Pańskie / Feast of the Ascension

Wniebowstąpienie Pańskie: FEAST OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD: Today our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; let our hearts ascend with him. Listen to the words of the Apostle: If you have risen with Christ, set your hearts on the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God; seek the things that are above, not the things that are on earth. For just as he remained with us even after his ascension, so we too are already in heaven with him, even though what is promised us has not yet been fulfilled in our bodies.
-Saint Augustine

TODAY’S MASS INTENTION is for Helen Glasgow offered by Suzanne Campbell & family. Eternal rest grant onto her O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her. Wieczny odpoczynek racz Jej dać Panie, a swiatłość wiekuista niechaj Jej świeci na wieki wieków. Amen

“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
June 1: Bernard, Jakub, Konrad, Magdalena, Nikodem, Symeon, Świętopełk
June 2: Eugeniusz, Maria, Marianna, Mikołaj, Piotr, Racisław
June 3: Konstantyn, Leszek, Paula, Tamara
June 4: Franciszek, Gościmił, Karol
June 5: Dobrociech, Dobromir, Dobrymir

OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

LUNCH AFTER MASS TODAY DOWNSTAIRS: Everyone is welcome. And thank you to everyone who brought a food bank item.

FROM THE PASTOR’S PEN: We have some wonderful news: Holy Redeemer will be hosting a very happy and joyous celebration on Wednesday, July 30th, when Joseph Cosmas Epifano will be ordained a Deacon. As he is now a member of the Benedictine Order, Brother Cosmas (his religious name) will be ordained for that Order. Next year he should be ordained a Priest. Born and brought up in the Pier and a member of the former St. Nicholas Parish, many of you know Brother Cosmas and fondly remember his family and late parents. So keep Brother Cosmas in your prayers and set aside July 30th to join with us in celebrating this happy event.
– Father Paul

POLSKI PIĄTEK: Thanks to everyone who attended our POLSKI PIATEK [Polish Friday] after work get-together. We hope to offer this get-together from time to time, and if anyone would like to help put it together, please speak with any member of the Rada.

RECENT IMO (in memory of) DONATIONS TO THE BUILDING FUND:
IMO Jennie Melski from Marilyn & Joe Gillis
IMO Jennie Melski from Dorothy Rozeluk

PLANTING OUR PARISH’S COMMUNITY GARDEN AND LEARNING POLISH AT THE SAME TIME:  At the time of printing of the bulletin, we were still finalizing the time. We hope to have a note for the opening announcements before Mass.

NEW ROOF: The formal campaign for the new roof will be launched shortly, and we welcome ideas or initiatives for creative fund-raisers that will strengthen us as a faith community and promote our cultural heritage at the same time as raising the necessary funds.

CAPE BRETON POLISH TARTAN: We have sufficient orders to support more than the minimum order of 30 metres of Cape Breton Polish tartan fabric – and we are happily taking more orders. Thank you! For those who filled out forms, please kindly give your payment to Shauna McKay (payment can also be mailed to the church), or please speak with Shauna if you would like a reminder of what you ordered (samckay@ns.sympatico.ca). Cheques should be made out to “St. Mary’s Polish Parish.” Profits from the sale of merchandise with the Cape Breton Polish Tartan will support parish community service projects, will help send some of our youth to Krakow, Poland, for World Youth Day in 2016, and will help with the upkeep of our beautiful, historic church.

POLSKI PIĄTEK [POLISH FRIDAY]: We will be holding an informal after-work gathering at the Polish Village Hall, downstairs, on Friday, May 30, at 6 p.m. There will be a chance to learn and practice some basic words or phrases in Polish (like how to order something). It will also serve as an end-of-course get-together for those who took our spring Polish classes. Everyone is welcome!

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: The inter-faith Habitat for Humanity group will hold its next meeting at our church on Tuesday, June 3, at 7 p.m. We are planning an event to take place during the Pier Multicultural Festival in August that will allow people to visit and learn more about our sacred places (while raising money for Habitat and the sacred places) and a fund-raising board game called “The Pier.” Again, profits would support both Habitat and the sacred places. If you would like to be part of these efforts in any way, please speak with Tom Urbaniak.

FRIENDS OF SACRED HEART CHURCH: “We Rise Again” concert, Sunday, June 8, 2 p.m., $12.
Stone Church Restoration Society Concert & Silent Auction featuring John & Patti Fukala with special guests Richard Poulette, Darren Stevens and John MacDonald. Today at 7PM at the South Bar Fire Hall. Tea, coffee & dessert served. Tickets: $10ea. at Pharmasave locations or call 539-1283. jeanmacaulay@hotmail.com

POPE FRANCIS IN THE HOLY LAND: “I wish to invite you, Mr. President, together with President Mahmoud Abbas, to join me in heartfelt prayer to God for the gift of peace. I offer my home in the Vatican as a place for this encounter of prayer. All of us want peace. Many people build it day by day through small gestures and acts; many of them are suffering, yet patiently persevere in their efforts to be peacemakers. All of us – especially those placed at the service of their respective peoples – have the duty to become instruments and artisans of peace, especially by our prayers. Building peace is difficult, but living without peace is a constant torment. The men and women of these lands, and of the entire world, all of them, ask us to bring before God their fervent hopes for peace.”

DIOCESAN SERVICE OF REPENTANCE for the devastation and hurt caused by the crimes of sexual abuse: Sunday, June 8, 3 p.m., at St. Joseph’s Church, Port Hawkesbury. Everyone is welcome.

THE RENOVATED AND REFURBISHED POLISH VILLAGE HALL is a comfortable, well appointed, modernized venue for events large and small. Please consider renting the hall for your events. Please call 564-8494.

OUR OPENING HYMN TODAY – ESPECIALLY CHOSEN FOR THE FEAST OF THE ASCENSION

Otoczon gronem świętych Aniołów

Otoczon gronem świętych Aniołów,
dziwiąc tryumfem świat cały,
z pośrodka wiernych swych Apostołów,
wzniósł się do nieba Pan chwały.

Płakał i bolał nad grzesznym ludem,
nim prawdę w sercach odrodził
nim zgładził grzechy odkupu cudem
i ludzi z Bogiem pogodził.

Wraca do Ojca jako Syn prawy,
Słowo Przedwieczne, Bóg wielki,
by Go na tronie mocy i sławy
wielbił i kochał duch wszelki.

Accompanied by a legion of holy angels,
wonder and  triumph of the whole world,
in the midst of His faithful apostles,
the Lord of glory ascended to heaven.

He wept and lamented the sins of people,
in him the truth of the heart was reborn
it took away sins, and miraculously restored
and reconciled people with God.

He returns to the Father as the Son of righteousness,
Eternal Word, Great God,
to Him on the throne, glory
adored and loved, encompassing spirit.
