“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name. Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
May 25: Grzegorz, Imisława, Maria Magdalena
May 26: Filip, Marianna, Paulina, Ewelina, Więcemił
May 27: Jan, Juliusz, Lucjan, Magdalena, Radowit
May 28: Augustyn, Jaromir, Wiktor, Wrocimir

LEARNING POLISH WHILE PLANTING OUR COMMUNITY FOOD GARDEN. We will soon be hosting a fun Saturday workshop to plant our parish ogrodek (food garden) while learning some Polish terms and phrases. Date and times will be announced next week, and we hope you can join us.
COMMITTEES: Candidates for committees are being invited: Finance; Property (to check on the property from time to time and to do minor repairs); Liturgical (to help plan special liturgical celebrations); Altar Society; Hospitality; Greeters; Ushers. If you would like to serve, or would like more information, please contact Tom Urbaniak by May 31 (563-1226; email@example.com).
NEW ROOF: The formal campaign for the new roof will be launched shortly, and we welcome ideas or initiatives for creative fund-raisers that will strengthen us as a faith community and promote our cultural heritage at the same time as raising the necessary funds.
CAPE BRETON POLISH TARTAN: We have sufficient orders to support more than the minimum order of 30 metres of Cape Breton Polish tartan fabric – and we are happily taking more orders. Thank you! For those who filled out forms, please kindly give your payment to Shauna McKay (payment can also be mailed to the church), or please speak with Shauna if you would like a reminder of what you ordered (firstname.lastname@example.org). In Shauna’s absence today, Tom Urbaniak can take your orders. Cheques should be made out to “St. Mary’s Polish Parish.” Profits from the sale of merchandise with the Cape Breton Polish Tartan will support parish community service projects, will help send some of our youth to Krakow, Poland, for World Youth Day in 2016, and will help with the upkeep of our beautiful, historic church.
POLSKI PIĄTEK [POLISH FRIDAY]: We will be holding an informal after-work gathering at the Polish Village Hall, downstairs, on Friday, May 30, at 6 p.m. There will be a chance to learn and practice some basic words or phrases in Polish (like how to order something). It will also serve as an end-of-course get-together for those who took our spring Polish classes. Everyone is welcome!

If you would like to be part of these efforts in any way, please speak with Tom Urbaniak.
MAY IS THE MONTH OF MARY: The month of May is the "month which the piety of the faithful has especially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady," and it is the occasion for a "moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world [pay] to the Queen of Heaven. During this month Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God's mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance" (Paul VI: Encyclical on the Month of May, no. 1; see also catholiculture.org).
PRAYING FOR PEACE ON THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF MONTECASSINO: “Every soldier’s grave is a cry for peace, a pleading for forgiveness and reconciliation,” said Bishop Jozef Guzdek last Sunday in a Polish Mass broadcast on all the major Polish stations. This was to mark the 70th anniversary of the final battle of Montecassino, in which Allied forces, led on that occasion by Poles but including Canadians, won a key victory and opened the road to Rome.
